I gotta tell ya, Warhawk, up here in da north woods we get a lot of different kind of bug problems. I have taken paper wasp nests off the underside of my deck, etc. That's pretty easy because it's on the surface. Termites live not only inside the walls but inside the wood (studs, etc) so they make themselves very hard to get at. If it was me I would call a pro. I'd research guarantees, etc., most places have extermination plans where they come out more than once to make sure they got all of the little demons. I'd go with one of the established outfits just because they've been around longer and I would think they know for sure what to do.

Mel, This is one area that I would definitely call in the pros.  There's too much at stake.

Do what my Dad did once...lol.  we were working in our house..in which we were getting it ready to rent out.  He went to put a nail in the wall when the hammer went right thru it.  He pulled the old dryboard off and found termites.  They were everywhere.   So what does my dad do?  He tears the whole damn wall out...piles it up and burns it...then we rebuilt the wall..LOL...good thing it was just one area....

I wouldn't hesitate to call in the pros on that one.  Think about how much is at stake ....

Thread hijack alert!!!!

Here in Britain we don't get termites - they get washed away by all the rain.
In my last house we had a problem with ants.  We tried all sorts of things to get rid of them:
We put down gel and I think they invited their friends round for parties.
We put down powder and ended up with little footprints around the house.
We traced their nest to the space around the boiler, behind a gas fire.  I decided to get in there with some spray and get rid of the little critters.  I'm not dumb enough to go into an enclosed space with the risk of iminent ignition, so heating system off.  Off with the fire and into the small space with the boiler with huge can of Raid.  I sprayed on every surface and in every space I could find.  (Have you noticed there are "highly flammable" warnings on those cans?)  I filled up that 3' * 3' * 3' space with as much toxin as I could get.  (The flammable warnings are very clear).  Anyway, I was pretty happy that I was gong to be free from ants after filling up that enclosed space around a gas boiler with highly flammable substances.
Good thing the heating system was off.  Apart from the pilot light.
My wife was in the kitchen and she said she heard this sort of "whoosh".
Went she came into the lounge I was on the opposite side of the room with no eyebrows and the front of my hair smoking gently.
In the fireplace was a couple of very surprised looking ants.  They called their friends round again in case there was going to be another display.

We sorted the problem in the end - we moved.
