Finding a community like this is very cool. I've been waiting to post because I couldn't get validated.
I retired from police work in 1998 and my wife and I moved to the north woods of Wisconsin after I came back from Sturgis that year. I spent the next 3 years letting my hair grow. In 2001 we vacationed to Colorado to see our new granddaughter and someone took a picture of me holding her. When I saw the picture I was a little surprised because I had long hair hanging down on each side of my neck and a shiny top. That, however, was not the last straw. If any of you are familiar with northern Wisconsin you have probably become familiar with deer flies. These are vicious little bastards that assault in hordes so as not to afford the opportunity for their victim to adequately mount a defense. So, one day I was out jogging on one of the back roads near our house and I got 3 or 4 of them caught in my hair. They started freaking out and trying to extricate themselves and that started them making a sound roughly like a dentist's drill. When I got home I told my wife I was cutting my hair and I got a home haircut kit from Wally World had my wife braid my hair. Then I cut it down close, no clipper guard, and finished it off with a Gillette Sensor Excel. I mailed the braid to a place in Florida called "Locks of Love" where they make hairpieces for kids who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. Most of the time since then I have been shaved, although I have gotten lazy a few times and let it grow shaggy, 1/4 inch or so. When I start feeling like I need to get out my old love beads I grab my new friend, my HeadBlade Sport, and mow the lawn.
I have had very few people over the years make "inappropriate" comments about my head. I don't waste a lot of time explaining myself to them as they have been so few in number. But I react differently depending on the situation. For example, my wife and I were at a comedy show at Nicolet College in Rhinelander, WI a few years ago and the comedian pointed out the fact that there was a shaved head in the crown and pointed at me. So I stood up, turned to face the audience and took a big bow. I really hammed it up, too. Seeing how much I was enjoying the attention he found somebody else to pick on.
In short, I love the feel of being Sly.
