Ok bros, gotta share this April Fool's Day prank that a local radio station pulled this morning... always jam while I'm getting ready for school and heard about it and thought it was pretty funny....
The local top 40 station in Louisville KY, 99.7DJX announced this morning that Gov Steve Beshear's office had announced late last night that as a way of boosting revenues in other cities around the state, that starting next year, the Kentucky Derby would be held in Lexington, not Louisville, the Derby's official home for 134 years.
You should have heard the ranting and raving of the locals here... I mean Louisville takes the Derby very seriously. There's like a million activities planned and alot of people have these lavish parties on Derby day. There's millions of dollars that are pumped into the local economy - hotels, restaurants, catering companies, florists.... it's like Kentucky's version of Mardi Gras pretty much.
Anyway, Lexington and Louisville are natural rivals (UK and UL) so people were livid that the newly-elected Gov would deny Louisville its annual week-long stint in the national spotlight.
Once the station announced (several hours later apparently) that they were just trying to have some fun with April Fool's since many people forget about it, people were even more upset. Apparently the Gov's office was upset, the Conv & Vis Bureau, the Mayor, the Metro Council, the state legislature, and of course Churchill Downs mgmt. It's all people talked about today - even at the culinary school I attend people were upset - our school caters a lot of events during Derby week.
Me, not being from here, knew something was up, but I thought it was quite creative and funny. The rest of Louisville? Not so much
