More product reveiws-Bump/Burn treatments
« on: February 23, 2008, 09:27:20 PM »
Ok this is a topic that I have spent alot of time and put alot of research in. When I first started shaving my head I got terrible red bumps on my head. I attribute some of it to inexperience and skin not used to it. But once I got the right gear and techniques I seem to have a handle on it. Even the burn on my neck!

Witch Hazel I am not sure about this.. When used alone with nothing else I get bumps. I do however belive this is good for the skin health in general. So I use Thayers aloe WH twice a day. I have heard from one guy that Thayers SuperHazel kills razor burn in its tracks. So as a bump/burn treatment I am not giving it high marks. 5/10
Skin Tight Extra stength liquid This is a liquid bump treatment that is applied after shaving. It is very strong and burns like crazy! It does reduce bumps quick though! I think this disolves your skin or something! It is similar to Tend Skin 9/10 for bump treatment
Skin Tight Hair And Razor Bump creme Again another Skin tight product from Walmart. This stuff doesnt have alcohol in it like the liquid so it doesnt sting. It has lots of Tea Tree oil in it though. So it kind of stings. Alot of times I use the liquid and then put this stuff on. It leaves a mean shine too! 8/10
Club Mend by Clubman This is a gel that dries fast. It is identical to ClearHead and can be found at Sally's. It doesnt do much for me though. But for dudes who like ClearHead this is the same. 5/10
High Time Bump Stopper double strength This is a cream that is supposed to be applied after shaving. This product doesnt to much for any bumps I have had. 3/10
Bump Patrol Extra Stength This is like Tend Skin or Skin Tight. Strong liquid that burns. But again it works very well to treat and prevent bumps. No complaints. 9/10
Clean And Clear pore Toner This is actually what I use most of the time in the morning. This is a toner that I splash on my head and face. This again burns bad but feels great and keeps the burn and bumps at bay. Feels a little sticky though. 8/10
Old Spice High Endurance balm This is a nice non greasy after shave that seems to work nice. I like it on the face and neck especially. I dont think it is strong enough for the head though. 7/10
Benzoil Peroxide I think this is the key to preventing and treating bumps. I use a 10% wash in the shower on the head and face after shaving. Then once out of the shower and after using Toner or Witch Hazel. I apply Benzoil Peroxide cream. Gel doesnt absorb well. Cream does. I have experienced a huge decrease in bumps and burn after doing this. 10/10
Moore Unique Razor rash Relief This is also another Wal-mart bought product. It does a nice job at helping clear up razor rash and irritation. Doesnt help for bumps and ingrown hairs though. Smells strong like Sulfur though!! It is patented and works bottom line.  Bedtime only though cuz it stinks. 8/10
Moore Unique Scalp and Bump relief I bought this because It claims to work on Scalp Folliculitis and Bumps on the base of neck. I wanted it to take care of ingrown hairs and bumps on scalp. It does. When applied after Skin Tight or Bump Patrol bumps dissapear quick. 10/10
Plain Alcohol I like to do a good Alcohol rub once in a while. For a short time I was rubbing hand sanitizer gel on my head and neck. I stopped because people were telling me that it was not good for you. We did it in Boot Camp but we were crazy too. I think a good Alcohol rub once per week does good for breaking down oils, and clogged pores.

I think this is the most stuff I have tried. It has all been trial and error, but It is worth it to keep a tight dome. This is all done after the cold water rinse and ice cube rub too.. I never forget that. The Ice cube rub helps cut down on alot of irritation. More reviews to come. Stay smooth O0

Isnt it funny how a cheapo piece of ice can do alot.  I guess I am fortunate enough not to have to use all that or some of that stuff.  I know you all are probably getting tired of hearing it...but the good ol clear aloe vera seems to be the one and only thing I need to use after the cold rinse and icecube rub.  I couldnt imagine having to buy all that stuff.

I'm the same way.  The first month after going SLY, I was buying about everything I could get my hands on.  Now the only thing I actually buy (besides blades and shaving gel) is a $1 bottle of witch hazel.  I always do the cold water rinse and ice cube rub and sometimes I remember to add a little aloe vera.  But most of the time it's all naturale. No gel or anything else.

One product I do use occasionally (and swear by it when I've been in the sun  too long) is the Bald Guyz Moisture Gel.  This is really good stuff and you don't have to order it online.  That's an important thing for me.

Thanks for this advice Nick!  From your advice, Im making a run out to Walmart tommorow and picking up both of these.  Two questions though.  The "Benzoil Peroxide", who makes this stuff (the one you specifically used).  Because, I've heard of it in the cream form before for pimples and stuff, but never have I heard of it in a 10% shower and head wash form.  And we are talking about two different products in that second description right?  The cream and the body wash right?  Thanks dude

I had gotten into a routine where I was only using Fruit Of The Earth aloe vera gel as my shave gel and after shave product all in one.  But I found that it just left my head feeling too tight and sometimes sticky when I would accidentally apply too much.  So I'm back to HeadSlick and HeadLube.

Lance...how much were you using?  I would just barely get a little squirt out of it...about the size of a pea.  But everyone is different.....so do what you feel is best for yourself.  Glad to see your shinny DOME back bro,....

Nick, per your advice I got that Skin Tight creme sh*t...It looks like it'll help...I definently like its consistency as opposed to the liquid.....But the benzoyl peroxide body wash, i definently could not find at Walmart...They said they DO have it, but only as a prescription....

Yeah, I think that was my whole problem.  I was using WAY too much.  Probably, to compare it, about a quarter size or more because I use it on my face as well.  It's real good for cutting down on redness and any blemishes for that matter that you have on the face.  But I would always start on the top of the head and I think that's where most of it was absorbed.  I read online after I gave up on it that if used just right it's about the best thing to use after a shave but if too much is applied it can be sticky and cause some major flaking from where the aloe vera dries up to lock in protection.  I just haven't got around to giving it another shot yet.  Actually, the best combo for me was the King of Shaves oil for shaving and then the aloe vera afterwards.  Head just stayed too oily though.  But, MAN, it felt soft as silk.  UH OH!  I've hijacked this thing and shifted way off course.  Somebody stop me............. :D

I use and Clean And Clear 10%BP wash. I think Oxy also makes a BP body wash. And as for the gel I just use the walgreens brand. You might have to try a drug store like Wal Greens bro. Wal Mart doesnt have alot of the stuff that I have bought.  Yea the skin tight creme is nice and leaves a hell of a sheen on your head!

Nick, do you wash your head with anything BEFORE? (IE Exfoliate). I have never seen any of these skin tight products at walmart, at least not in the shaving section, and I've looked at every product in that aisle...lol...is it located elsewhere? I assume the BP is in the face product aisle?

OK, I can now say two things definitively:

One, There is absolutely no need for a walgreen, sears essentials, cvs, rite aid, and walmart in the same area, because they all sell the same things...

And Two, none of them sell Clean and Clear 10% benzoil peroxide wash. After checking every store, I ended up with Oxy Face Wash Cream, which was the ONLY Benzoil Peroxide wash any of the stores sell...the rest are all Salacylic acid or the like. So I bought the Oxy Cream, the Clean and Clear toner, and the Clean and Clear 10% Benzoil Peroxide Cream. I have the clean and clear gel already, but you specified cream...

Ill try this stuff and see how it works...I am concerned with using the cream all over my head after shaving, mostly because the gel drys my skin out horribly...

Also, Shave Secret apparently isn't sold around here, as I couldnt find signs of it anywhere...
