Wireless Network
« on: February 16, 2008, 08:23:23 AM »
I was just curious as to how many of you in here connect to your computer on a Wireless LAN. I have been lucky enough to receive a new laptop which has wireless capabilities. I can now sit on my lounge and post on SBG's while listening to my iTunes. My PC is now history! No wires or nothing.

Just curious to who else here on SBG's has a similar setup?

No man I am still stuck behind a old PC. I am looking to get a nice Laptop with wireless for sure. I allow myself 1 big purchase per year. And this year it is either a new HD TV or a sweet MAC Laptop.

Timmy, believe me, No way in hell I can afford a laptop either.

My brother in law works for HP and has been kind enough to give me his old laptop as his work has paid for him to get a brand new one.

I just saw a sweet offer in the paper today. A local supermarket chain is offering a laptop for $299.

At first I thought this is a super deal. But when I looked at the fine print, I realized this may not be so good after all. They are factory restored Dell Laptops, w. Windows 2000 OS, Pentium lll, and a 40 Gig Hardrive. Plays DVD's but has no CD/DVD burner.

As you can see it would need "some" major upgrading.
What's your thoughts on this one? Is it worth the $299?

We purchased a laptop over a year and a half ago and it has greatly improved the usability of the computers in our house.  We still have the PC, but it hardly ever gets used.  The wireless was pretty simple to set up and now I sit in my easy chair and talk to my SLY bald buddies.  I think it's great.

We use the wireless router for the home office (where I'm at 90% of the time). The Lovely Mrs. Schro has a PC upstairs and I have a company-issued laptop.

One and only computer in the house is a laptop with wireless router.   With living in two different places throughout the year, was the only option that made sense.

I guess I am a computer whore .. I have 6 computers.  Three in the office.  One that serves as a server of sorts and one "family" computer, and then one that I use for .. well,  I don't know exactly.  Maybe I should turn it off.  And then the Laptop.

Anyway,  the laptop is wireless.  I bought it last year to use as a backup encase my Internet goes out I can pack up and go into town.  My income is dependent on my ability to be online.

Wireless is nice,  although I prefer wired.  I have an Ethernet port in every room in the house except the bathroom.  Wireless is pretty cheap to implement.  The only reason I can think of to have it is for a laptop,  or maybe a computer that you just can't get wired to.  Wireless is and will never be as fast as wired.  Still .. its kinda nice to sit on the front porch with the laptop.

I'm not sure that post was either informative or coherent .. it was wireless rambling I think.

I've had a wireless setup for six or seven years...if you've got a laptop, it's the only way to go. I use both my personal and work laptops on the network, as well as a desktop that's mostly for my daughter to do educational games. I haven't really noticed any speed issues on the wireless network. I don't have any trouble streaming music or video...I watch TV on my computer more than I do on the television.

I have wireless even though I have wired my entire house with ports in the wall.  I have to access points in my house so that my wife and I can roam anywhere and still have a great connection.

I used to have a desktop that I gave away after getting a laptop with wireless.  I have a desk that I should just sell too.  I never sit at my desk.  My recliner is so much more comfortable.  Or sitting on the back patio smoking a cigar like I am now.

I've been using a laptop with a wireless router for over a year and it's the best.  Just be sure you secure your wireless access so you don't have any un-invited users.
