ingrown hairs or blackheads?
« on: February 02, 2008, 04:45:43 AM »
Hi guys!

Greetings from Ireland!

After shaving my head, I get blackheads or ingrown hairs.  I don't know which.
Up until now I shaved every 5 days (lazy I suppose, but after reading good info here, I realise that I will have to shave my head every day or at least every second day).

My routine is as follows.

1. Warm shower - Wash head with Neutogena Visibly Clear.
2.  Apply King of Shaves shaving gel, then Gillette Mach 3 Sensitive gel.
3.  Shave with/against grain using Mach 3 razor.
4.  Rinse with cold water and apply Gillette Mach 3 aftershave gel.

I don't get many irritations with the above products.  Bumps and redness are at a minimum or at least better than when I started out and had nicks, irritation and bumps galore!

Anyhow, help with the black bits (they look ugly!) as I am tired of wearing a cap when going outside.

Cheers

Welcome Irish, and gotta say nice six pac!!
Usually ingrown hairs will come from a dull razor. You may want to try switching to a 4 blade razor like the fusion or drop to a 2 blade razor. I would also try the headslick cream with the shave. Definately shave more frequent through the week will help to keep your scalp from becoming oily, thus giving you blackheads.
Also quit wearing at hat for a while to let your skin breath.
To remove the blackheads you may need to try some different blackhead remover cream, I hope someone else can let you know if they had this issue, I never have.
Hope to hear more from you and remeber to keep it Sly  8)

Hey bro, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!  You may want to try exfoliating your head with St. Ives Apricot Scrub if you have it over there, or using a product after you shave like HeadBlade's ClearHead  (http://www.headblade.com) or TendSkin (http://www.tendskin.com)  If you can't get any products, look for something that is a blemish controller or contains Salicylic Acid.

P.S. What's a BBR?

People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

Good advice from the guys... more frequent shaving and exfoliating could definitely help.  Welcome aboard, and thanks a lot for making me more self conscious about my lack of a six pack other than the one in my fridge.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

It's my understanding that many Black men get relief from ingrown hairs by switching to a DE razor.
Also you can get some relief by using Witch Hazel after you shave, I'm fond of Thayer's Rose Petal Witch Hazel.

Thanks guys for all the info.  I will take it all on board. BTW, the site is excellent!

I shaved my head this morning and will continue to do so every morning from now on.

As for the picture, it is the only one that I have from the BBR (Body Building Revealed - a site by Will Brink).  Just in case ye thought it was a vanity thing!

As for the 6 pack, I have found that drinking 6 packs of guinness creates a nice stomach exterior.  Honestly!

Now thats an exercise program I can do.  FINALLY!

When I don't shave for a day or two, I get little bumps all over my head.  Looks and feels like the hairs are growing back in and get kind of stuck.  My solution is to shave everyday.

Hi guys

Well, I have included an exfoliation scrub pre-shave (clear & clear) and witch doctor ;D (contains witch hazel) post shave in my routine.  I shave either everyday or every secondday.  The cold water rinse and ice cubes work a treat for any inflammation  O:O.  I use baby oil in my preparation as I find it is very good on dry skin.  I put the baby oil on before applying the King of Shaves gel or foam.

However, I still have what seems to be blackheads and I am wondering whether applying benzoyl peroxide (what % and how often) would do it any good?

I include a picture of my dome to see if any advice would lend a remedy.  If not, then off to the doctor I do go.  Don't look at it if you have just ate or have had a keg of guinness (Mike & Bald take note!).

Cheers
