Sly Guys = Bad Boys?
« on: January 24, 2008, 10:58:19 PM »
Yesterday, I read a article in the Seattle Times about "Bad Boys".  They had a clean shaved Sly Guy with shades and a leather jacket to illustrate.  So I am wondering, are you considered a "Bad Boy"?  Do you consider yourself to be one?  Anyway, I don't consider myself to be a "Bad Boy".  I don't believe that anyone considers me to be one.  I am actually just a big teddy bear.  Anyway, here is the link to the photo and article.

Okay...this post has really gotten me thinking.   Being newly sly (almost 2 weeks!) I have yet to deal with many people I don't know.  Lately I've been working a lot of overtime so my life is...go to work, sleep, repeat.  Inane ramblings aside, I am a very laid-back, peaceful guy but I wonder now, for the first time, how will my new look affect the reaction I get from those I haven't met.  I am honestly not very concerned (a new feeling for me, maybe it's the slyness) about how others will perceive me, but it does make me curious...

Now then back to my response to the post...I do not consider myself a "bad boy" at all, nor do I believe anyone I know would.

If you're still reading this...thanks for dealing with my random ranting!

I don't consider myself a "bad boy" but I know I have been looked at as a bad boy by people that don't know me.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

Well I'm a guy that grew up in tough area of Baltimore and even though I haven't lived in the Baltimore area for 20 years, the city boy is still in me.  I have a city accent, I'm a pretty big guy, and I've never really been one to take any crap off of anybody... so I've always sort of been viewed as a tough guy.

So the answer for me personally is......  I don't think it's made me any "badder" to the people that know me but I do get some sideways peeks from people in public.... I just figured it was because being SLY is such an awesome look.

I get the same thing as Tyler. If people don't know me, they tend to steer clear unless I smile at them. It can work to your advantage a lot of the time though.

Ditto what PP said.  People who don't know me see leary of me until I smile or make a friendly gesture towards them.   The kids at school have remarked that they thought I was a bad a$$ with the sly look and the bike though.   >:D

That could definitely work in your favor.

I don't consider myself to be a "Bad Boy".  I don't believe that anyone considers me to be one.  I am actually just a big teddy bear.
Marsh, you're always finding these
"very interesting and controversial" articles.

You're certainly far from a bad boy.
But if you're just a teddy bear, I'm just a puppy dog.
A very 'bad' puppy dog. That was a typo. I meant a very 'bald' puppy dog!

BTW, Aren't u a very active church member. No offense but I always thought you reminded me of a male equivalent of Dana Carvey's SNL's 'church lady'!!
Just jivin'!! You're a good man Marsh, but I do miss that character. And it was the closest I got to church each week back then.

"Could that be SATAN?".....No worries, I did not take offense!  In fact, it put a grin on my face!  Yes, I am pretty active in my church.  But I try not to be in anyone's face about it.  Usually, the comments are pretty incidental.  But I won't hide that part of my life either!

Getting back to the "bad boy" stuff.  While I didn't think that anyone has thought of me as a "bad boy".  I do think that those who don't know me might think of that.  I remember being with a buddy of mine who wanted to go to a bar for a beer.  This friend had the MPB thing going (he is now sly) and a goatee and moustache and Bronx accent.  I had my current look.  We ended up talking to a couple of women.  This was at a biker bar.  The women ended up asking what kind of "bikes" we had.  We had to break their hearts and tell them that we didn't own any.  So I guess in that situation, we both looked like "bad boys", even thought I know that many motorcyclists are really not "bad boys".

Maybe it's the facial hair, I've only got eyebrows and lashes!  But in my vast experience ;D totalling less than four months, I've had the opposite.  I used to get comments, why are you mad, why are you frowning.  Now people I don't know smile and say hello, nod, etc.  Really positive brief encounters (except the spouse of course).  Maybe, I'm smiling now that I'm not worried about the hair "do" coming apart or getting rained on, etc.d  This works for me, and never any Bad Boy stuff at all.  Now about the eyebrows, if I can't figure out how to trim them back, I'll have another way to do a comb-over! :*)) :*)) :*))

Same here, although there have been a few times I've tried to use the "look" to my advantage.

SLYinKC,
Take a look at GASlick's new pic.

That is one badass and intimidating mug!
I wouldn't want to get in barroom brawl w. that guy.

Seriously guys you've had a bad influence on him.
He once was this smiling and happy dude. All this talk about bad boys has changed him. I hope there's still some of that old GASlick left.
