How sly is your world?
« on: January 21, 2008, 06:30:18 PM »
The sly look seems to continue to increase in popularity each year as more and more guys decide to take the plunge.  We are still a minority, though, albeit a growing one.  More often than not I still find that I've got the only shaved head in the room.  I may see a handful of shaved domes on the train or in a bar, but whenever I'm in a roomful of people, I seem to be the only one.  I see a few at work but not many considering the size of the company.  None of my close friends and no one in my family has a shaved head.  The only place I go where I can be sure to find plenty of other sly guys is the gym.

How about you?  Are you a "lone sly guy" most of the time or are there other sly guys in your inner circle?

It seemed that way to me in 1983 when I started razor shaving my head.  In fact, total razor headshaves shaves were uncommon in the active Army at the time(although there were a number of us doing it) Most of the grunts that wanted it really close just had the barber peel them down to stubble with the clippers.  Being cueball slick started to pick up and now has become somewhat popular. I use to sort of emjoy being the only skinhead in the room and now its common to see several of us baldies in a restaurant, etc

Actually, at my work we have about 5 sly guys in in a company of about 40 people.  We all sit by each other, so we call it the bald zone.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

I dont have any in my immediate family ...other than my brother in law...but he is like to himself.  Dont see him much anymore...even though he does live in town.  He thinks we are all freaks....so what ever.  I have several at church so its quit funny when we all decide to sit together in the front row and admire being able to see thru teh pastors hair....or what he has left of it.  At the end of the sermon we tell him it was a hair raising expirence....lol  We are quit the class act all of us sitting in teh very front row.  I know i know...im gonna get the...UM...CHurch is supposed to be taken seriously.  We do.....we actually sit there and pay attention....its just the after comments we get that is funny.

There is nobody in my family or in my office that is SLY.  There are a couple of guys at my church, but not anyone that is in my circle of friends.

That's what makes SBG's so great.  A place to come and hang out with other guys who use the same barber. ;D

more than 50% of my friends are bald or buzzed real damn close.

In my "old" world (So.California)...quite a few...bald be is buzzed or shaved smooth was everywhere in my personal life and especially in my everyday surrounding life (at least 20-30 a day)...

Now my life now ( Vancouver/Portland area)...not as much at all! Here and there but way less than in Cali...Lots of buzzed MPB dudes...but most not slick shaved...

I kinda like it being a bit more unique! ;)

I have one close friend who is sly, one cousin, and several guys at work.  And, of course, lots of friends, family and co-workers that should be sly.

Oddly enough, the last time I went to the bar it seemed like there were no sly guys. But as I was leaving, an old buddy came in and we started talking, he complimented my shaved head and took off his hat, and he had gone sly this past week just for kicks.

Not so many sly guys when it's this cold, though.

My guess is that a lot of sly guys go into hibernation :)

I am bound to see one or two sly guys out on the streets every day.  In the gym; only one or two (Yes; I have been going to the gym regularly...  even lost about two pounds--quite a feat considering the amounts of sweets and pastries around our house the past month) ... so it's not REALLY widespread here in Saskatchewan, but there is definitely a sly presence.

and really; do we WANT the majority of guys around us to be sly.   There's a lot to be said for the uniqueness factor .

my world is not sly at all. my bald head is the topic of the town it seems. not many young college guys choose to shave or even need to shave it. whenever i see people i know they get this incredulous look on their face ( :o) and are like "what happened to your curly hair??" haha its actually amusing because i know they're thinkin i'm crazy for doing it, but whatever -- i know its pretty sweet.  it's different, and it takes some getting used to, but it kinda teaches you to be your own person.

being the only sly guy in the room is almost like having a conversational bullseye target on your chest. people are gonna look at, judge it, and inquire about it because they're naturally curious about it (wouldn't you be if the situation were reversed?). as a result, you have the opportunity to be the primary focus of attention for a bit, which forces you to prepare for the brutal onslaught of questions and judgments. therefore, i'd imagine that you can acquire the incredibly useful skill of interacting with people that can carry over into your career/school/personal and social lives. i think that this simple event can help you begin to establish your individualism

yeah that sounds about right. being sly is awesome

There's one SLY guy down the hall where I work...... Two of the guys that help me coach my one little league team are SLY. They were actually
very supportive and gave me a lot of good info right before i went SLY last summer.

I live in the country so we still see our fair share of mullets.... the worst hair cut ever!!!

Dinosaur,, I'm in the same boat for the last 10years people judge, people looks at me like WTF.. and each year I kind of go into deep thinking about it. should I let it grow. and so on. well this week was one of them ,,, my wife well she loves me for who I am so no probl. their.   So I let it grow for 2 days.. 2 tomany.. wife looks at me shaving the 3rd morning well that didn't last for long did it. NOPE.. I can't see me with hair.. I love the it

so keep sly, stay honest to you and you only..... cause at the end of the day it's either you love yourself or you just satisfy others..

I am the lone sly in my world.  I see a few guys around town, but I don't know any of them.
