I used to buy cheap sunglasses and on occasion I still do if I find a pair that I really like. Once I started buying good sunglasses I noticed that;

1) I never lost them as the price I paid seemed to register in my sub-conscious to not leave them around.

2) the fit and durability was WAY better than the cheapies so they rarely broke (and the one pair of Oakley's I did break were repaired under warranty).

3) the lense quality was so much better. No distortions, less apt to scratching and they were not just dark tinted they actually enhanced my vision in the sun.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for, good sunglasses are like good shoes, worth every penny.

I bought a nice pair of sunglasses twice.

The first time, I left them laying somewhere, and felt so bad, that I figured I would never forget them again.

The second pair I always made a point to put in a pocket or carry with me.

I put them in my jacket pocket ... I took off my jacket ... laid it over a chair ... and sat right on the glasses.

That was my last pair of nice sunglasses.

I am in agreement with the "you get what you pay for" idea, and I have been able to keep quality sunglasses around for years.  My old Oakley Mars are still a favorite, designed by a fellow bald guy Michael Jordan.  Sort of unique and not for everybody.  Just purchased a pair of Oakley Whisker polarized sunglasses and I'm really pleased with them.  The first pair didn't feel quite right, so I called Zappos and they sent an exchange pair that came the next day.  Those fit perfectly.  To each their own.  (One of these days I'm going to get a picture for my posts.)

I've been buying nice sunglasses for the past decade or so.  They really are so much better than the cheapies.  Much more durable and each pair lasted for at least one year.  I've owned 3 pairs of Oakley Fives (the older model, all of which i lost  >:(), a pair of Costa Del Mar's (left on the roof of my car  >:(), and am currently sporting rootbeer-colored Arnette Slides.  The Oakleys and Costas were anywhere from $80-$120, but the Arnettes were about $75 and they have a great shape for my head.  I think square frames generally look better as a good contrast to our round bald heads.  I also highly recommend amber/brown colored polarized lenses.  Great for driving.

In between losing all these glasses I bought some cheapies at gas stations/Wal-Mart to hold me over and they usually last no more than a couple weeks  :(

Good topic, JDog.  I really want to find me a good pair of sunglasses.  Right now I just use the cheapies from WalMart since I tend to either lose or damage the ones I have.

I'm with SLYinKC I usually sport the Walmart cheapies. After reading all the posts I'm thinking it might be time to invest in a nice pair. I have always liked aviators, but am I missing a bigger picture? Not all shades look good on me. I have a big head (literally and figuratively). Any suggestions on styles to consider?

Just go to a Sunglass Hut (or similar) and try a bunch of different pairs on... find a couple that you like and then either go home and order online, or go to that manufacturer's outlet store.  I got mine at an Oakley Vault outside of Palm Springs for about $50 less than at Sunglass Hut.

and IMHO bring a hot/fashionable woman along for her opinions -- never do it alone

Define "cheap".  I just bought the most expensive pair of sunglasses I have ever owned - $17 from Target.

I love sunglasses but im cursed with bad vision. So i have yet to find a good looking solution to keep my glasses whislt being protected from the sun

I have transition lenses right now but they only work outside. And i need sunglasses most in the car. I thought about buying a pair of the special kind that fit over regular glasses but they just looked stupid to me, and prescription glasses are too expensive for me

oh woe is me :(

anyone have a solution to this of sun glasses that just naturally are pretty good at fitting over regular glasses?

Have you checked out the prescription Ray Bans at Lens Crafters?  I got a pair a couple of years ago- mainly for driving.  AWESOME!!  Unfortunately I trashed them after about a year and they didn't continue the exact kind I had.  :'( But they have some great curves prescription lens glasses! O0

I'm with ya Morthen. I just throw a pair of clip-ons over the regular glasses. $10 at any drugstore. I don't worry about impressing anyone and the clip-ons actually look better to me than those huge things that cover your regular glasses.

Surprisingly, when I got the glasses I'm wearing in my pic, the eye shop sold very classy clip-ons. Around $30-50 or so but you'd never know they were clip-ons to your regular glasses. Maybe check out that idea next time you head to the eye doctor.
