went to the doc today. was disappointed with myself. still 225. still smoking. need to get some kinda kickstart. update on dad. they are removing a little more of the foot soon. just behind the toes. doc said it would help save the leg if he did that. we shall see.

Sorry to hear about your dad having to lose more of his foot, but hopefully it works for the best.

Hey Paul,
I noticed that the thread had gone dead, but I read your goal about quitting smoking and I wanted to say it is a really good goal. I have heard that there is a surgery you can get that is fairly inexpensive and effective. Here is what I could find that sounded like the thing I have heard about:

Maybe something to look into, but quitting is definitely a fight worth fighting.

down to 220. gave up sodas today. only allow myself a little bit in the evening. plan on going all the way after a week. i'll keep you guys updated.

Good luck bro. Soda's were really hard for me. I don't know why. It was almost just as hard as giving up smoking. Weird. But it's been about 2 months now.

Glad to hear your dad's on the mend, Paul. As to the weight: avoid the killer combination--oil, sugar, and carbs. I cannot bring myself to forbidding beer. You've got to commit to the change--it's not just a diet for a month or two--now, because if you don't you'll be stuck with the weight for the duration, and that will lead to disabilities in middle age. Since I have never smoked (have had asthma since childhood), it is harder for me to appreciate a smoker's addiction. My grandfather, mother-in-law, best buddy's father, and two uncles all died of lung cancer, clutching cigarettes to the bitter end. I know reason is not sufficient. Have you seen those photos of a smoker's lungs? Perhaps the idea of getting entirely clean may help: clean head, clean lifestyle, clean lungs. I hope you succeed in quitting. Professor Melon

Hey Paul, hang in there. I was never a smoker (the occasional stogie on the golf course), so I can't offer any advice on breaking that habit. Though, I read somewhere that it takes three weeks to "develop" a habit. I have no idea if that's true, or if that logic applies to breaking a habit or the chemical effects of nicotine. Needless to say, good luck.

lipton makes a diet green tea w/ citrus that is pretty good. has helped alot. dad is doing ok.
