hi nick912-i am really interested in DE shaving and even have purchased a merkur adjustable razor.i am use-sing merkur razor blades and have to say it is the best shave i have had but in certain parts of my face i just cant get it as smooth as other parts of my face. the more i try it just leaves me with razor burns. do you think it is the blades.? i am useing head slick shaving cream. also do you have to make a mental note of which side of the blade you use? i normally use a mach3 and don't see me going back unless i cant master this DE shaving. i have watched the videos and i don't have a coarse beard so i am hoping it is the blades. any advice is appreciated as how you master this thing thanks
randy

Hey Randy how goes it slick brother?

Well I have about 5 DE razors. I Merkur and 4 vintage Gillettes. I have used those Merkur blades in all my razors, and on me they are sharp but brutal and unforgiving. I went to the Personna blades which can be bought at Wal-mart and they are not as sharp but more gentle. It just takes more an additional pass. Are you using a Badger brush? If not you need to use a brush. It really enhances the DE shave.

I have shaven my face before with Head Slick and a brush and it is pretty nice. Also try a shaving oil under your lather even on your face. It helps me out alot. I make 3 passes with my DE on the face. One with the grain, rinse and relather with brush, 1 side motion rinse ans relather, then one against the grain then rinse. It leaves my face and neck hair free with little irritation.

If you havent watched this guy's videos please watch them. They help soo much. He is the one who inspired me to start a nice DE shave.

thanks for getting back to me nick. i ran down to wallmart and bought a pack of personna blades and am going to give them a try tonight. i bought a boars brush and mug soap. i have seen the vids. the boars brush seems cheap. should i get a better one like the brand you suggested. ?also the blade cost only about a 1.50 for 10 blades. that will surely cut down on the cost of shaving. i cant believe how close it shaved most of my face and how long it stayed hair free and baby smooth.cant wait to change over to the DE razor for the head. cant complain about the head blade though.

do you like use one side of the razor and then switch for the next shave.?

Yea DE shaving is soo much cheaper than regular shaving! I wish I could DE shave everything! haha Good on ya getting a brush. They really honestly make a big difference. Start out with the boar's brush and see how your like it. Badger brushes hold water better thus making better lather. No I alternate sides of the razor with strokes. I will do a pass with one side, flip it do another pass, then rinse both sides and repeat. Also something else that I have been doing is after my shave taking the blade out and putting it in a small cup of alcohol. Then I rinse the razor its self in alcohol. This ensures that everything stays nice and sanitary. When Im ready to shave again I just take the blade out the of alcohol and pop it in!

Let us know how the Personnas feel and how a brush shave feels. Use the brush with Headslick. It works it into a nice lather. I use a big coffee cup to make my lather in.

hey nick.i like the personna blades better and they are cheap. also i notice everyone seems to shave 3 times.this just kills my face and i seem to get just as good a shave  just with 1 pass. if anything after the first pass i just go back against the grain. is there a reason to shave 3 times. i mean how can ya get closer and how does your face handle it.

also how many shaves do ya get from 1 razor

thanks

randy

also even if i changed blades every day it would only cost 54.75 to shave my face and head and i would even get a closer shave than with my mach 3 razor. the only draw back i see is you cant shave as quick because you are in control of the angle. used it on my head once so far but am going to keep practicing on the face before i switch over.also which dc razor do you end up useing?

I change my Fusion Power blade every week on Saturday, and will do so tomorrow-today being the last day of the third month since first going at the remnants of the glorious mop on 10/12/07!  Expense, nothing compared to the $30 a haircut I was paying to support the dying mop, and the cost of the "thickening" shampoo & conditioners, and electricity to carefully blow dry the remains into a semblance of a head of hair then spray it into a rigid helmet and pray for no rain or strong wind!  Freedom is priceless.
