iPod Questions
« on: December 15, 2007, 10:23:21 PM »
My mom bought my dad an iPod for Christmas.  I've been copying some of his CDs into my iTunes and onto the iPod for him, so he doesn't have to go through all that initial set-up when he gets it.   I know he'll have to download iTunes onto his own PC.  But after that, to sync his iTunes with the iPod, is it just a matter of connecting the cable and letting them sync?  Will that upload all the tunes from the iPod into the PC or will it just erase all the tunes that are on the iPod because there's nothing on the PC?

Also, my mom and dad will be taking a trip to Australia and New Zealand in the spring.  They'll be gone for a month.  There's no way the iPod will stay charged that long.  Is there any kind of charging accessory I can get that will work Down Under so he can continue to use it throughout the trip?

Yeah, unless the songs that you are putting on the ipod now are on his computer, they will be erased.  Though, if that is done, then once he installs itunes, he just has to plugin and it will sync if it's a Nano or a regular ipod.  If it's a shuffle, he'll need to choose a playlist to sync it to.

You can buy travel charging equipment with adaptors for all e-systems of the world which must be connected by the USB cable to your iPod.

Run that by me again?   ???

If I connect an iPod with music already on it to a PC with iTunes but no music on it, will the music upload to the PC or will the music on the iPod be erased?

Razor, if you download iTunes onto your fathers computer and then add music to HIS iTunes library and then attempt to sync the iPod on his computer, than YES the music that you put on for him from your computer will be erased.

When installing iTunes on his computer, you need to go into I believe the tools tab on the top menu screen and you need to select an option MANAGE MY ITUNES AND FOLDER MANUALLY. This will prevent the iPod from automatically synching and deleting all the music you put on for him.

This happened to me 3 years ago with my 1st iPod and I lost almost 2000 songs, some that I can never get again.

One way to combat this is to first hook the iPod to the computer. Set your computer to show hidden files. You can then transfer all of the music files from the iPod, to a folder in the computer. Disconnect the iPod, and then download iTunes. Once iTunes is on the computer, upload the folder into iTunes. All of the music will be there. That is how I saved my ass when my computer crashed, and had to start over.
