Hard drive maintenance
« on: December 15, 2007, 03:17:58 PM »
My computer has been soooo slow lately so today I finally took some time to clean up some unnecessary files, delete old emails from my inbox, defragment the drive, etc.   I used to do a decent job of staying on top of clearing out Temporary Internet Files, but ever since I upgraded to the new version of Internet Explorer and started using Firefox as my primary browser, there doesn't seem to be a Temporary Internet Files option when you right click on the icon.   When I ran the Disk Cleanup Utility it told me I had 38,000 Temporary Internet Files.   Is there a way to clear these out periodically under the new browser versions without having to run the Disk Cleanup program each time?

start run > %temp% delete all files....
in IE 7 tools > options > Delete > delete tempory internet files

I wouldn't be too worried about temp directories very rarely have i found a huge issue with these files, in all my time as MS support i remember 3 cases of installing program issues and empting the temp folder was the cure.

i suggest, check add/remove programs for programs you don't use and or don't know what they are and remove them, than do defrags weekely or so.

also i'm a huge fan of chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r.... catch it before it's a huge problem.

a Handy free tool called CCleaner check it out.

also run adaware on a weekly basis, and spybot search and destroy.

some are free tool versions. google them easy to find.

also one that is not free is cyberscrub.. be carefull on the options you can actually wipe out a drive.
