trying to regrow your hair
« on: November 30, 2007, 11:19:40 PM »
hey, i'm 23 and have been going bald for a few years now. i am thinking about continuing to try and grow it back, against almost all odds, b/c i really don't want to go bald and deal with all the problems, especially since i have such pale skin (suburns!) and also am planning on getting into an image- based profession, acting. what do you all think about my decision and do you have any further advice, such as hair growth strategies. i am pretty much against transplant surgery and drugs like propecia and rogaine. of course that further hinders my prospects of growing back any hair, but i know there are all natural products and some diet plans that purport to help grow back hair, so i am going to start getting on them. thanks for your help!

Being a bit of an actor myself (amateur) I can relate to how it might compromise your chances a little if you are bald, but then again, why should it?  I just recently played a part and was asked by the producer to grow my hair, but I didnt, and still got the part.

I know it can be a bit different if it's professional, maybe, but then again, they will have wigs etc for certain parts, and will be able to afford to supply them (unlike amateurs!).  It shouldnt stop u gettin parts - but if you really want to grow it then that is the right thing for u.

Personally, I've never found it a problem bein bald, but I'm not that ambitious, and am just reaching the age where I can play 'middle aged' balding characters!  If I was your age, I guess I might think different.

The main thing is: don't go for hair transplants  or implants or any of that sh$t - just be yourself, and if that means shaved rather than untidily going bald, then shaved is the best thing. O0

Hey boss, I don't know what problems you are talking about with being bald. There may be problems associated with going bald, but being bald is all good!  8)

If you're a good enough actor, there should be parts for you, bald or not. Plus, I think you could always step into the dressing room and have the staff select a wig for you if the part calls for it. As far as procedures go to combat hair loss, I don't know of any. Never looked into them, never plan to.

Agonizing over what cannot be is an insult to what is.

You're wise to avoid surgery and drugs, and we can all benefit from improving our diets.  It may be worth a visit to a dermatologist to see if your'e losing hair for some reason other than male pattern baldness, and if you are, perhaps it can be treated.  But in all likelihood, it is male pattern baldness, and if that is the case, then you just need to accept the fact that your hair is never going to grow back.   I know that's not what you want to hear but at some point, you'll need to come to terms with that, and you'll be a lot more at peace with yourself once you do.

Take this as an opportunity to redefine yourself.  Shave your head and hit the gym and work on developing those pecs and biceps.  You don't need hair to be good-looking or successful.  Just avoid the George Costanza look and you'll be fine.  In the end, all any of us can do is do the the best we can with what God gave us to work with -- and not lament what he didn't give us to work with (i.e, more hair).
