The other day I was cruising through Wal-Mart while my wife was looking around and of course I head over to the shaving section to see what products they are currently selling. I'm used to seeing the usual big name brands when I happen to go to Wal-Mart, but this time was a little different. After my conversation with a little old man that was looking for a styptic pencil, I noticed something that I had never seen before - Shave Secret. No, it's not a secret, it a product called Shave Secret. If it was a secret, it wouldn't be in Wal-Mart. Then again, I hadn't heard of it, so maybe it was a secret. Anyways...I grabbed it off the shelf to see how good this Shave Secret product really is.

The next morning I grabbed the little bottle and headed to the shower. And this is what I found:

The Shave

Like a lot of oils I've tried, Shave Secret provides great protection for your scalp and face while also providing a slick surface to shave on. The instructions state the following:

    1) Generously wet the area to be shaved

    2) Massage 3-5 drops of Shave Secret into a moist palm

    3) Massage into the skin

    4) Shave as normal. (Be sure to rinse your razor often)

    5) No need to rinse the shaved area, just towel dry.

Considering I was shaving my head and it has more surface area than my face, I decided to use 9 drops instead of 5. This seemed adequate as I got a great shave out of it. I was able to do all passes on my head with just those 9 drops and didn't need to re-apply at all.

When it says to "Be sure to rinse your razor often" they are not kidding! This oil provides a slick surface on your skin, but is very sticky on your razor, so it tends to gunk up the razor pretty good.

Pros

This was a great shave and better than any product that I've used that is also on Wal-Mart's shelf.

It was less than $4 and will probably last two months using it on both my face and head.

It comes in a bottle that is only 18.75 ml, which I'm guessing is about 1 oz, so this is perfect for the traveler.

Cons

The smell is a very strong menthol like tree smell. Almost like Eucalyptos, but slightly different.

The razor tends to gunk up a lot, though this didn't really effect the shave, just a nuisance.

Thanks for the review Ty, though I think it must still be a secret here.  Couldn't find it on the store shelf by me, but will check out Walgreens and CVS to see if they have it.

Ty, thanks for the review.  I've used Shave Secret off and on for several years (way before shaving my head).  King of Shaves oil works better for me (less drag and less razor clogging).  Both are good choices and give great protection to the skin.

You can't beat the price and portability.

Great review, though I will probably pass on it. Hate the whole razor clogging thing.

I have some and I use it mostly w/ taking care of "rough" spots I find after shaving with Headslick and my scalp is already dried off.  The shower shavers might like it alone, but I'm still a sink man myself.  It's good stuff.  The odor is pleasant, spicy but not quite Old Spice.  I recomend it.

I agree with you Max.  Though, this was the only shave oil that the Wal-Mart in my area carried, so that's why it was the "Best shave you could get from Wal-Mart."  They did have KoS Alpha Ge at our Wal-Martl, but I'm not a big fan of that.

It's got clove in it too, T. That is the strongest smell. I love the stuff and use it under my HeadSlick.

I was in Walmart today to buy an ice pack. While there, the shave aisle, was right by me. I saw this Shave Secret, and figured I'd give it a go. I used about 8 drops, and applied it to my 4 day growth (I normally shave every second day, but I injured my knee, and standing has been uncomfortable). I began using my HeadBlade. After only a few passes, the HB was clogged solid. I switched over to my Mach III Power, and finished up. It is definitely the closest shave I have had. I love it better than Head Slick, and other shaving creams and gels I have used. The odor reminds my of Vicks Vapor Rub. Only not as strong. I am giving up on Head Bl;ade, going back to my Schick Extreme III disposeables, and using the Shave Secret oil. I will still be using my M III Power for my face with plain old cream.

MAYBE THIS ISNT THE PLACE TO ASK, BUT... does anyone know if you coud put like scented body oils that come in those lil vials into regular BABY OIL? I was just sitting here at work,(doing nothing but mental calastentics) thinking that SOME essentil oils have like relaxing properties , etc... and has anyone tried to MIX them into regular baby oil for "shaving" purposes ?  if NOT... then next week when things calm down a lil I'll try it in one of the lil travel size bottles of babyoil and just see what happens

This is a fantastic product put under your favorite cream. I bought some the other day and have used it twice with HeadSlick and KOS Alpha. It gives in incredible smooth shave. I hope it helps cut down on my irritation

I've been using this under HeadSlick, and it's good stuff.

My only complaint is that sometimes it stings my eyes ... but I'm not putting it near my eyes!

The clove smell really clears the sinuses.
