Just joined the Gym
« on: October 18, 2007, 11:57:48 PM »
Hi guys. Just joined a gym yesterday after about years. I'm trying to shift the gut and the love handles. I figured that 60 mins worth of cardio should be sufficient 6 days a week. I really can't cut down too much on my diet or change it drastically. Reason? I'm Asian and curry and hot food is part of my diet. But I get plenty of protein and carbs through it and it's fairly balanced. I just consume way too much of it. I'm not gonna hit the weights yet till I at least lose and inch from the waist to be honest.

Way to go Shak, I've been doing 30mins on the bike or a 2-3km jog every other day to try and shed some pounds too.

Best of luck to you.

I'm also a fan of fiery hot curries and like to treat myself to Vindaloo once per week

Curry is part of my diet and when I get told to cut down on it then you might as well stab me in the eye with a rusted nail! But seriously I went to the gym this morning and did 1 hour of speed walking mixed with some jogging on the treadmill and managed to burn around 550 calories. I'm gonna try and get the exercising done in the morning so that the rest of the day is free. What I don't want to do is make the mistake of counting how many calories I take in. I fell for that last time and soon got bored of the cardio because it became a chore. I just want it to become a part of what I do on a daily basis like shaving etc and not just an "additional" chore otherwise you can soon become bored.

Curries, great, just eat  brown not white rice!  Heavy on "complex carbs" with them and lots of the tasty veggies in Asian cooking, just put the "sweet" sauces on the side. No potato curries--they're great, but boy can that put on weight.  Then as always, don't eat too much.  Get a iPod or radio and have some other entertainment while you workout, it also keeps you from talking to others and that only works the jaws, not the gut.

One of the things you can do is cut your meals in half and eat them more often. So instead of 3 meals a day, try 4 to 6 meals.  You'll start to notice that you by the 5th and 6th meal you will only want about 1 or two bites of each, but make sure you eat them since it will keep you metabolism up.

Good luck, Shakf,  I also trying to get back into the workout mode.  I've kinda let slide this summer.  Gotta get about 10 lbs off and put some muscle back on.

Try less cardio and more full body / muscle group exercises. I was doing up to an hour of cardio a day with slow results. I started doing more squats, woddchoppers, rows, crunches, etc. with about 10 min cardio warm up and feel the results much more than before.

Since taking a friends advise to working larger groups of muscles with medium weight  (just enough to do 3-4 sets of 10 reps with about 30-60 sec. break between), I am really beginning to shed belly and love handle fat and reducing my possibilities of growing "mits" or Man boobs.

I have a friend that strictly works with an Exercise ball (swiss ball) with different crunches and core strengthening exercises and he has had a lot of success with not only loosing weight but tightening up.

Another thing you can do is push-ups... probably one of the best upper body conditioning exercises you can do.  Not only do they strengthen your chest and arms, you also work on your back and abs.  Do a web search on them... many different variations to keep them interesting!

Also, as everyone knows, everyone and their brother does studies on exercise... I'm looking for a specific one... basically from what I remember about it, it states that men should do no more than 30 minutes of cardio a day.  More than that will decrease muscle mass... so cut back to 30 minutes of cardio with weight training/calestenics (sp) to lean and tone up faster (as Marz said).

It states that in the Abs Diet also.  That's why circuit routines are very good.  Do around 12 weight lifting exercises in a row with only enough break between each exercise to setup the next exercise.  This will give you a cardio workout but will build muscle while doing it.

I don't think the muscle in  your jaw counts.  That's the one that keeps causing the trouble. :*)) :*))

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.
