Full Beards and Shaved Heads
« on: September 27, 2007, 11:36:22 PM »
Well, I am sure that we have talked about this topic before, but I can't find it.  Anyway, it seems that most sly guys have the goatee and mustache look.  But I know that there are a few men like our own JohnMont, who wear the sly look and full beard well.  Anyway, I was inspired to write about this since I got a new laptop and can more easily put new pics up.  So now my current photo shows me about 9 years ago with a full beard and shaved head.  I kind of actually like the full big beard look with the shaved head.  But while I have dated while sly, I'm afraid that the full big beard look could scare some women off.  Plus I serve on my church's worship team, so I feel that a more trimmed beard or goatee is better in that setting.  Anyway, what do you think about my full beard biker look?  Also what have  been your experiences with full beards and shaved heads....especially big beards?

Marsh your pic of the full  beard and sly dome looks good. I think there is a point though when large full beards and a shaved head doesnt look very good, especially scraggly unkept beards. If I could, I would grow a full beard but I can only grow hair on my upper lip and chin and nowhere else.

Personally I think the full beard/sly look is awesome, but like JDog, I think it looks best when it is trimmed down and not full.  Am actually planning on the same look over Christmas vacation.  Go for it if its you marsh.  As for your church, we have a sly guy with full beard in ours and no one finds it offensive, in fact aren't church people supposed to be the MOST forgiving?  As we have always said, you have to be yourself!!!

Actually, my church IS very forgiving.  Having a beard would be no problem.  But I will be taking a greater role, moving from being on the worship choir to being a background vocalist.  So I was thinking it would  be less distracting if I didn't do the BIG beard thing.  It would be different if we were a biker church.  But a trimmed beard like JohnMont would be probably what I would do.  The second thing that keeps me from growing out a beard is that I need to make a change in employment.  I believe that the sly look is not a problem here in Seattle.  But I think conservative is better when looking for work though.

You look good with the beard, Marsh.  Do you have a current pic?   I suspect it might have  a bit more grey now; which is fine (nothing against grey hair here !!) ...   just wondering what the "real you"  looks like at the moment.   Yeah; I keep mind trimmed down; I use my clippers on the  1/4 inch setting; seems to be working.  (so it's just a little more trimmed up that it is even in the avatar) .

I agree that the big bushy beard doesn't look that good with a shaved head;   it's kind of off balance; or ; it looks like the guy has a split personality ...    trimmed down just works better .

Sly w/ trimmed beard would be just fine for church, no matter what your role, I imagine.   the employment search ... that's a tough call.   You want to be yourself; but you don't want to turn off a potential employer;  and if the person interviewing you is the least bit uptight about people expressing their individuality;  then you might not do that well on that all-important "first impression"  ....  Maybe go back to the goatee for the job search ?    it'd only take a month or so to get the beard back in shape..

John

Currently I have a goatee.  As for the beard, I do need to somehow increase the size of my latest beard picture.  The grey is approaching the amount you have John.

I think the full beard look rocks as long as it's kept trimmed down.  As a matter of fact that's how I wore mine for a while until the job hunting thing started.  Because I will admit that a clean shave or goatee does look a little better kept up with.  I would usually rock a little more than a shadow and kind of cut it a little narrow at the tip near my ears.  This made it blend a little better than just cutting it straight across.  I say for sure rock it bro.  In my opinion though, I would trim it down more than what you have in your current avatar.

I think big beards are really not the fashion these days, regardless of whether or not there is any hair on the scalp.  JMO.

I see a lot of bald guys that keep the head clean shaven but have a few days of stubble for a beard.  That usually looks pretty cool.

I've done the full beard in the past. I usually stop it at the arms of my glasses.

Even though I really like the Van Dyck and shaved combination I currently sport, I think the full beard with shaved pate looks great when kept neat. A scraggly, unkept beard is going to look awful regardless of what's on your head.

I have a very full goatee, on the longer side and have enjoyed the look a great deal.  Use to keep it short.  Mine is mostly white now.

And someday you'll show it to us, no? (prod, poke!)

Well, I believe that JohnMont was asking for a more recent pic of me.  Unfortunately, my more recent pic of me with a beard is pretty washed out.  But here is one with glasses and my grey goatee and one with hair and a full beard.  So do you think sly was the  best option.  Of course, I  am saying this to a prejudiced audience!  hehe
