Buzzcut vs Fuzzcut
« on: June 03, 2025, 02:02:23 PM »
Hi guys

Brief progress report since my posts on the Intro board -
Five weeks into buzzing my hair myself again, really glad to be back to that and the habit is sticking.
Slowly but steadily preparing the springboard to leap back into the wonderful world of shaved baldness.

Currently maintaining a #5 buzz (not very exciting I know) but should get down to #4 in the next week or two. The plan is to be on #2 by the end of summer and hopefully a full headshave or two before the year is out.

Not sure if a #5 is really a buzzcut, it's more like a fuzzcut  ;D a bit tedious and annoying for someone who's experienced the pleasure of shaving bald.
Kind of like the awkward phase of growing out a buzzcut, except in reverse  ;D

Of course it's not as bad if you fade the sides a bit, but I  couldn't be bothered to that with a DIY buzzcut. Why turn a 5 minutes trim into a 25 minute procedure.

I reckon anything longer than a #3 turns into fuzz quite quickly, and therefore not a proper buzz in my view. Your thoughts?

Really liked a 1.5 buzz, looking forward to that again

Yeah, so like, why are you doing that??  a number four or number five looks like a kid who hasn?t had a haircut for 2 1/2 months.

Get your groom on bro man! Break out that razor!

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to stand your length, no style. When I grow out my hair, I keep the sides, back, and landing strip shaved. When it starts looking like a flattop, I maintain a #2 on the sides.

I think a #2 all over would look better on you, you would look well groomed.
Bald by choice, and loving it!

Why the staggered over the year approach? I agree, jump to #2 already. Great for the summer.

Why not just go ahead and shave it.  You have done it before, so I don't understand why you would want to take months to go sly when you could do it in less than 20 minutes.

I agree with Semi-Sly. You need to get your groom on! #4 or #5 all over just looks shaggy. A longer top looks nice but the sides can be tapered or faded for a cleaner look. But since it's summer, take the top down to a #2 or #1.5 top with faded sides. It's a perfect summer look if you are you going to do a buzzcut.

During the summer, faded sides are important to avoid weird tan lines. It should be done weekly and you can just cut the top every 2 weeks. It simplifies things.

I kept my hair buzzed to a 3 on top and a 1 or 2 on the sides for years.  I cut it once a week to maintain that. It was a lot of upkeep and work to clean up afterwards.  I?ve kept mine shaved smooth for nearly five years and can?t see myself going back to hair again.

Hi guys
Thanks for the responses and encouragement.

Yeah, I'm sneaking back in rather than a big comeback.
The stealth approach has worked well for me in the past.
While I'm not overly concerned about reactions, l prefer to get (if anything) an 'oh' rather than an OMG!! if you know what I mean.
Added to this, I've changed jobs and living in a different place to when I was last sly, so outside of family, the people I see on a regular basis do not know that I used to buzz or shave my head.

I do appreciate the advice and words of encouragement.
Will keep you posted- there could be some surprises yet...
