Pet Peeves
« on: September 05, 2007, 12:54:37 AM »
Now I have a few pet peeve's that really just p!$$ me off so I'm oging to let'em out.

This one is hard to descrive out side of conversation
Question: Do you have a Woman/Man? (in reference to having a girlfriend/boyfriend)

Well last time I checked Woman/Man is not the name of a term that someone can possess. Yes I have a car, yes i have a computer, yes I have a dog, but no I do not own a person.

With my job in the computer tech support industry I get a lot calls from average people that get to hear all the computer lingo and just don't understand it. And being a polite and professional person I just do not say anything. So now's my chance

Download: to save something from a computer to your computer, either over the internet or local area connection.

Upload: to save something from your computer to another computer, either over the internet or local area connection.

Delete: the act of removing a file or folder from your computer

Install: the act of putting a progam on your computer to allow it to run, thankfully windows has installer programs that unpacks the files and places them where they belong.

Uninstall: the act of removing the files from your computer to prevent them from running, once again windows has a nice little program that does that too.

Now ever everyone understood those terms a sentence like

I downloaded OFfice 2007 to my computer it did not work so i deleted.

(now this could mean that someone downloaded the trail form www.office.microsfot.com {which if anyone wants send me a pm and I'll get you the link for the 60 day trail} noticed that the office icons where not there and deleted the installer, or it could mean they installed it, clicked an icon it would not open and than uninstalled it ) I've actually heard that to mean both

Or and even better one

I downloaded OFfice 2007, uploaded it and it would not work so I deleted it from my program files.

Literally this means saved the installer to my computer, than transfered it to another computer, it didn't work than i deleted it. however often it means'

Downloaded it, installed it, didn't work and uninstalled it.

I mean can you see how confusing it can truely get. Ohwell that's my 5 minutes of being an @$$..... what's your pet peves?

Where I work, reboot means logging off.

"No sir/ma'am, I need you to power down the PC, not just log off"   O0

Gotta love users, job security.  :@`

Frost I work tech support/sales in a Call Centre for a Telcommunications/VoIP company and I gotta say I totally agree with everything you say. It is mind numbingly frustrating of the ineptitude of people concerning even the simplest of computer tasks.

I seriously think all Microsoft OS should come with a tutorial and a test at the end, that covers the basic's, and you cannot get full function of your computer until you pass said test..... and periodically a refresher comes up which you have to pass, and the only way to remove the refresher is to delete a key in the registry, that way people who are completely comfortable can go in delete the key. And when people talk to tech support over the phone, we should be able to revoke the liscense at any time.

I forgot about logging off and rebooting,

I have said for years that M$ didn't increase computer literacy, they just lowered the standard.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Yeah that's sounds pretty spot on there....

I was dealing with a customer once and he was so pissed cause he did an upgrade however his OEM install of Windows XP had a WINNT folder insteader of a Windows folder so the upgraded acted like a parrel install...... so all his programs were gone... his only option format with Windows XP Pro and install everything from there...

so he threatened to go to Linux..... so I brought up command prompt and told him to open add/remove programs...... he didn't know hwo.... than i said open a notepad document, he didn't nkow how.... so than I said. Have fun with linux.

He stuttered for a few minutes than asked for me to help recover his PC so he can use windows.
