Cut head with new razor (pictures)
« on: January 03, 2016, 12:45:08 AM »
So I got a new razor for Christmas. I normally use the Schick Hyrdo 5, but my sister got me a Harry's razor. Went to shave my head and it cut and ripped up a portion of skin. I was wondering if anyone here has done something similar. I have been shaving my head for over a year and nothing like this has happened. Hoping I don't get a big scar on my head. I tried to place the flap down where it was before and have been putting moisturizer on it as well as desitin.

These pictures are in chronological order over the course of 4 days. The cut was 7 days ago and is still scabbed around the edges.

Welcome, bsweatt!

Yeah, that was a pretty nasty cut. I have heard some negative reviews about Harry's razors, so I guess you won't be using those anytime soon. Here is what worked for me when I got a nasty cut.

1. Rub the area with an ice cube. In fact, I recommend you rub an ice cube all over your head after each shave.

2. Looks like your skin is starting to scab from the cut. I would get a styptic pencil or rub a wet aspirin over the spot and put a bandage on it for a few days. If you don't like to go out in public with a bandage, you can wear it while at home and/or sleeping and just remove it before you go out . (FWIW, I've seen guys with shaved heads with a bandage covering a cut, and it's not a big deal to me, nor should it be to anyone else)

How long have you been shaving? If you just started shaving, it could have been a rookie mistake, or if you've been shaving a while, you know that Harry's razors don't work for some people, at least not on the head, but I hear they work fairly decent on the face. Good luck, and hope you heal quickly!

Ouch. Sorry that happened.

The last time I took a chunk out of my scalp was when I also was trying a new razor from Dollar Shave Club. The blades were not a compact as my Fusion's, so my looser skin slipped between the blades and I had a whopper of a cut. I did not shave that area for two weeks, then was very gentle with the Fusion for several weeks after that. It did not scar.

Been there.  Mine was with a quality DE razor and good blade (can't remember which one, specifically).  Those are the worst because the plug that was sheared off takes longer to heal than clean slices where the wound can be approximated.  Mine was related to being a little careless.  It happens.

Just take good care of the skin around it.  I find pre-washing really well with Stirling Soap Company's "Sheep Soap" (unscented, original) really, REALLY improves healing and softens the scab.

Ouch. It happens. I sometimes find I buy a pack of five blades and there might be one I put on and I end up cutting myself to shreds. Dunno if its sharper or "faulty" but I very often have to bin the blade as  just know I will end up looking like I have had a head message from Freddie Krueger.

Just avoid the area for a bit and it'll heal

DON'T USE Harry's on your head or anywhere!

I had the same thing happen I wrote to them about it, they refunded me for the blades.  The way the blades are made there is a bendable flap of plastic under it it can separate and cut you like a potato peeler. They should recall them and fix this design.

It is a bad design and I can only imagine someone having this happen on their face or neck.

Don't let it scab, keep it covered and clean it each day changing the covering often. It might look odd to have a bandage on your head for a while but will be better than a scar. After it heals use mederma to help it fade away.

Mine healed up but never again would I use those razors or recommend anyone to do so.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The cut edges are almost healed up. Now I have to deal with the raised red bump left behind where I put the flap of skin down. I've been told to rub it to try and break up the fibers underneath to smooth it. As soon as it heals I'll start putting a scar fading cream on it. Definitely won't be using those razors again on my head at least. Really don't want a big red bump on my head, if anyone has suggestion on how to smooth the raised bump out let me know please.

Thanks for checking back in!

Here are a few things that I did when I had a raised scar. However, in some cases, the result may be flatter skin, but you may run the risk of hair not growing there permanently.

1. Peroxide it and bust it with tweezers. Blood may come out, and you may have to keep it covered with a bandage (I suggest the BandAid oval blister bandages that you would normally use on your ankles/feet, but they worked pretty well when I had the keloid on the left corner of my neck.)

2. Wart remover. Many people will disagree with me on this one, and this route I would go as a last resort. Apply the wart remover, and keep it covered with the aforementioned bandage. The bump will flatten within 48-72 hours, but it may be a long time before the hair grows back in that spot. You may also have a quarter-sized faded spot/scar in the skin but the bump will be gone

3. Aspirin. Wet an aspirin when you're home at night, and rub it all over the bump.

4. See a dermatologist and get a cortisone injection over the spot.

5. Tend Skin ($17) or Bump Patrol ($5) also works, but give it about 5 days or so

6. Just keep it covered for a few days, and if no improvement, you may have to see a doctor or dermatologist for injections and/or prescription medication (I recommend a dermatologist)

I know it may be a bit pricey, but ScarAway silicone cream is a good way to minimize the appearance of scars. ($35). I bought it even after I had my neck scar tattooed and as the days go by, I see massive improvement to the point I'm not OCD about the scars anymore.

PS If you use the wart remover, the bump will disappear. Just hope you will be able to deal with the possible aftermath. However, by you being pale, it may not be as noticeable.

That looks nasty.

I would not use any chemicals on it at all! Nothing! Keep it clean and dont touch it. Let nature repair it. I definitely would not use wart remover!! Keep it clean.

I use Mach 3 these days. That is a very nasty cut.

Ouch...that made me cringe!  I hope it heals nicely for you.

I did the EXACT same thing with a Harry's razor. No more Harry for me, although I still use on face. Once these are gone, I'm done with Harry. The photo below is about a week later, removing the bandage.
