Have a decision coming up. Surgery? Looking for insight.
« on: December 23, 2015, 01:15:46 AM »
First of all, this forum is what got me started on shaving my head.. Been a member for over 6 years. I really enjoy the sly ways... That said, an insecurity ive had for a long time is having a very weak and recessive chin. Its bothered me a lot and keep thinking about getting it fixed. Having a shaved head really brings it out even more.

I went to one of the best surgeons last month and got some feedback. He reccomended double jaw surgery, but said I could get a 'sliding genioplasty' which will give me the results I'd want. Really just looking for more harmony and balance to my face. Maybe I am crazy!?  :/O

Anyway, here are my pics. Love to hear your input if you think the SG image below will make me more attractive, happier and more confident overall. I really think it would help me out but the commitment to a surgery is very scary. Ultimately the decision is mine, but getting others opinions I think would be beneficial. The cost is near 10k... I'm 25. Thanks!

IMO , growing a longer beard or goatee , would solve your problem . Give it a try at least before surgery.

I also suggest you try a full beard or at least a goatee with enough length on it to "shape" your jaw as you wish.  A lot of guys grow beards to cover facial features that they are not happy with.  Another thing to consider, as you age, you will likely develop a double chin (most guys do, even if they are physically fit).  Will you then undergo more surgery to correct that?  A beard will cover them all.  Based on your photos, you could grow an awesome beard.

If you notice in my avatar, I am looking DOWN, it is because when I shaved off my VERY long beard, I noticed a TRIPLE chin. Beard is on it's way back.

I could (OK, SHOULD) loose weight, but that beard started coming back the next day!

It is obvious you have facial hair capabilities, give it a shot.

Unless you are fixing severe breathing or dental issues, I would NOT do jaw surgery!

Best,

Steve

I have always considered myself to have a bit of a weak chin. That's one of the reasons I decided to keep it. It made a huge difference when I let it grow to about one inch long.

I don't see anything about your chin that should require surgery. I think you are viewing your chin like so many view the shape of their head. You are being you own worst critic. In my honest opinion, you look fine, sir.

Well, I for one have had several facial surgeries; some of them purely cosmetic.  None of them have ever lived up to my expectations and all of them have left me somehow, "different", in that all of them have left some kind of "reminder" in that not all of the sensations have ever been the same. (e.g. if I run my finger across my forehead I feel it running vertically through my eyelid (!?!) and other stuff like that.  Also, I am lucky, some people who have chin implants and the like experience a permanent loss of feeling - and I can tell you from having experienced several temporary, (thank God) losses of feeling in portions of my face that this almost drove me to panic!

Overall, I am thankful that they were able to put me together and make me look fairly normal - albeit far from perfect.  (I mean, at least little children don't go running away from me screaming, etc.) And, I have even had some cosmetic surgery to make my eyes look better, (because they are not set evenly in my face, people always tend to notice that something isn't quite "right" and stare at my eyes so I had some of the droop taken out of the lids).  But overall, if there hadn't been a real "need" to do something with it in the first place, I don't think that I would put myself through any of it again.  And, like I said, none of the surgeries ever produced the results I had hoped for. ( I still have very uneven eyes, one of them with potosis droop; my nose had to be put onto my face on an angle so that it would center over my mouth, etc, etc.)  And yet - I am the only one who really notices most of this!!!!!

And, even after all of that, most people "say" that they cannot see any difference in how I look!?!

So, because I have a critical eye, I can see the difference between your before and your morph.  And I can see how you think the morph photo looks better - it does.

 BUT:
1. Your current chin is just fine!  I am serious.  You don't even have any overbite!
2.  You are a very handsome and desirable man.
2.  There is absolutely no need to hide that beautiful head or face under any hair or beard - please don't do that - don't start "hiding" any of yourself (that road never ends)
3.  If it really, really bothers you - then go for the surgery BUT do it only for yourself because absolutely no one else is going to notice the difference - it is that small!!!!  You may be really pissed off - but I am telling you that no one is going to notice that little bit of difference!

So, since the change is going to be so minute, be damn sure that you really want it and be aware that you may suffer some adverse consequences which will be lifelong and irreversible.

This was a very thoughtful and insightful response. I greatly appreciate your input. Means a lot. This is the reason why I made this post in the first place. Ive been in my head too much lately and I really have almost been pushed to the tipping point where I nearly paid the fee and scheduled surgery.

Reading horror stories and the thought of just not feeling the same, let alone looking the same had me worried. After reading responses and doing some self reflecting...  Ive decided i'm going to hold off on this and save my money for something more useful.

Growing up ive always been self conscious. Shaved my head when I was 16 in high school. I wore a hat everyday of my life from age 7-21. This only helped morph into other insecurities to find ways to improve my physical appearance to make up for my lack of hair. These past few years ive finally felt comfortable in my own skin and just thought this would make a good improvement in terms of appearance.

That said, i'm going to start focusing on other aspects of my life that can be improved such as physical health and personality and make the most out of what I have.

Nonetheless, appreciate all of the comments above. This was a wake up call. I need to shift my thoughts elsewhere. Merry christmas and happy holidays. Apologize for the delay in getting back to this thread... I'm going to go ahead and remove the images.

 :)
