I have a pair of Wahl Balding clippers and I won't use them on myself or on anyone else. I agree with you. Not only are they sharp, they are also zero gapped and they can cut you up badly.
I actually feel the same way about using my 0000 and 00000 blade on my Oster 76's. I have several times cut someone with them. They are really dangerous right around the ears.
For "shaving" a head I prefer to use my Osters with a 000 blade, followed by my Andis trimmer/edger, and then using the Andis brand foil shaver for head shaving. Honest to goodness that shaver gets it as close as a straight edge. Not as close as a Mach III, but close as a single edge blade!
One of the tricks to getting the shaver to do a good job is to make sure that the skin is clean of all debris and dry. After using the clippers on the head I use a light dusting of powder on my neck dusting brush and brush the head. I then pull the skin taught and glide the shaver over the entire head in several directions but with very little pressure. That powder really makes a difference!
