I want to start shaving.
« on: March 07, 2015, 09:42:03 AM »
Hi guys, it has took a long time, but I think that I have to start shaving my head.

What tipe of blade do you recommend for a beginner?

What aftershave? I have an oily skin....

I like the matte look in a shaved head, is there any product for that effect?

Thanks!!

Hello there! As far as a beginner blade, I'd recommend one of the Gillette razors, preferably Mach 3. Absolutely stay away from Bic! I use Sea Breeze for sensitive skin regularly for aftershave but many on here like witch hazel. Both of those products are good for preventing infection.

I personally don't know of a product that promotes a matte finish but I'm sure my fellow SBGs can comment on that.

Headblade has a matte lotion called Headlube matte.
When getting started with head shaving go to your local haircut shop of choice and have them buzz your hair down to a 0 before you take a blade to your head.
Headblade is a solid product to begin with, just make sure that you don't press down on it during your shave.

I'll disagree about the HeadBlade -- I think that it is far from beginner-friendly. I'll second something easier to handle like the Mach 3 (which is what I use). You don't need to start slicing up your head on your first foray.

What are you already used to using for your face?

Fellow beginner here.  I used a Mach 3 at first, but I find the headblade to be much faster and easier to use.  When I started using the head blade, I was able to get my head smooth ten minutes faster.  Though I do think it is tough to use on certain parts of my head, though overall, I like it better.  I second what was said earlier, make sure and cut your hair as short as you can before you start shaving.

I don't think the blade you use matters as much as making sure you clipper it down first. Also, I would do a shave with the grain first before going against the grain.

I've recently started shaving my head and changed from a normal razor to a head blade as it was easier and more intuitive to use, but this may have been because I don't shave my face.
First started shaving my head on the 9th October 2014

I recommend using whatever razor you have been using for your beard (unless it is something disposable like the Bic) simply because your hand already is practiced at manipulating it.  I have tried HeadBlade and some double edged razors, but I came back to what I first used, the Fusion.

I also prefer a matte finish, and HeadBlade's HeadLube Matte is the best thing I have found. Even it, however, does not do a great job of suppressing my scalp's gloss. I recommend just using a basic aftershave balm the first few weeks until your skin gets a chance to toughen up to the razor. A preshave oil like Shave Secret also works very well at cutting down on the friction.

Welcome to the board, sir!

Since you will be a new head shaver, I would recommend the razor that you use for your face.  That way you will have some familiarity with the feel.

I'm another Mach3 user, and have used it for over 10 years now, I don't put anything on my head post shave, so i can't help you there. For the actual process get your head trimmed with clippers, as short as possible, with the actual shaving especially for the first month be a really light touch for the first month, once your skin gets used to it, then try against the grain for a closer shave

so I think that I have to buy the headblade razor and headlube matte. But what tipe of headblade razor? there are diferent tipes with direrent number of blades...can you explain me what are the diferences?

and another question: what tipe of gel or cream for the shave??

thanks a lot!

I really like the Head Blad Head Slick.  That's the best shave cream I've ever found.  For a pre-shave I tried Shave Secret, but it made me break out.  Now I use coconut oil and I get a real nice lube and the razor just glides; plus it's natural and good for your skin.  If you want a fragrance you can add essential oils to it.  For an after shave I use the Lubriderm 3-in-1 lotion.  It soothes my skin like nothing else I've used.

The ATX wasn't around when I started shaving my head, so I started with the sport.    (Actually started with a Mach 3 ... but as far as the headblade razors go, I started with the Sport)

However ... after having used the ATX, and if i had to do it all over again, I'd probably start with this razor.  The adapter is like a shock absorber so I personally find it to be a bit more forgiving.    I have gouged my head a few times with the sport when I zoned out and used just a little too much pressure.

For that shock absorber-like feature of the ATX ... my vote would be to start with the ATX
