So I did it..

I have been buzzing my hair with the clippers for a while now, but tonight was the night to go all in. I have to say it does feel quite liberating...I like how clean i feel too! I thought I was looking pretty good too, until... I looked closer and noticed some VERY unsightly red blotches all over the back part of my head. I was wondering if anyone else has these or knows of anyone who does? I actually would like to keep my head sly, however if i cant rid these red blotches I will be nearly forced to grow my hair back out. tried including pic, but uploading this post proved to more difficult than most.

anyways, I am new here.. Ive lurked for years now, but didnt want to join the discussion until I actually took the leap of becoming sly. Im 26, live in the US, and serve in the US Military.

Welcome to the board, sir! And congratulations on taking the plunge. There is nothing like that smooth feeling.

Those red spots are not uncommon when you start shaving. I had them show up about an hour after I first shaved. They usually are caused by your scalp's skin, which has not been exposed to anything more abrasive than your soft hair, reacting to the blade of your razor. The area under your hair probably was not exposed to sun and therefore is the palest part of your skin right now, so the redness is more noticeable in contrast to it. Once your skin is accustomed to being shaved, they stop. Mine took about a week to fade out.

What I found to cut down the irritation was to use a preshave oil like Shave Secret and an after shave balm. Both usually can be found in the shaving aisle of a grocery/drug store.

Welcome.  I'm glad you're enjoying being smooth, and I hope you'll be able to continue with it.  Having never experienced red spots, I can't pass on any personal advice.  I can advise you to trust the information others can provide you!  People on here know their stuff when it comes to head shaving!

Like my fellow SBGs have said, nothing to be too concerned over.  Your scalp is just sensitive to the razor.  I get some red spots after shaving but they go away within a half hour after shaving.  Like Cave said, a pre-shave oil helps very much with that.  For my aftershave, I use an astringent called Sea Breeze, which you may have heard of, that makes the skin feel really clean.  Many on here use witch hazel as a substitute for that.  After about ten minutes has passed, I'll put on 100% aloe vera gel that makes it feel really good.

I often have red spots immediately after shaving, too.  They disappear after 20 minutes or so.

Welcome to the group!  Lots of good people with good advice to offer.

I agree with what's already been said, it's your head getting used to the razor for the first time.  Also make sure not to apply pressure, let the blades do the work.  I find I get some red spots on occasion when I'm in a hurry and end up pressing down on the razor harder then I should.  I don't get cut, but I do notice the redness from the irritation.  It usually goes away after a little bit.

Keep at it, don't give up!  You'll find you made the right decision by shaving your head.

wow! thanks for all the great replies! I do very much appreciate the advice and tips. I noticed today some of the redness went away (about 30%), but for the most part the dots are still there. I'm starting to wonder if these were already there, but never knew it because of the hair coverage. maybe like some weird birth mark or something lol? Ill wait a week or so before I jump to any further conclusion, besides the normal redness of a newly shaved scalp. lol I'm going to go out tonight and purchase some of the recommended products to see it it helps some. Welcome, redhead! I think the guys who posted before me summed it up, but if it was not mentioned before, when you shave in the future, rub your head with an ice cube after shaving. Also, we thank you for your service to our country!
