Starter DE reccomendations
« on: December 19, 2014, 07:34:31 PM »
So I recently realized that the cartridge blades are causing a lot of skin irritation because I have sensitive skin. Someone recommended that I try a DE razor because the blade is easier on the skin and doesn't cram the hair back into the skin. I currently use a Mach 3 ATG every other day but I want to give the DE a try. What DE would you recommend for a newbie and what blades for starters? Thanks in advance.

In case of fire, break open the vodka. Its going to be a long night...

DE shaving is 75% technique and 25% tools. Once you have the technique you can get an acceptable shave from almost any razor. A good place to start might be the local Walmart with an Art of shaving or van der hagen shaving kit.  The generic DE blades you can find almost everywhere can give you a good shave but there are many good choices from places like Amazon, I like Astra SP.

The trick to technique is to find that 60 degree angle and use no pressure. Let the blade do the shaving. If you apply pressure like a cartridge razor the blade scrapes skin. Also plan to make two passes. The first pass cuts most of the hair. The second pass takes the last little bit. By pass I mean a single squeegee like swipe. No back and forth or going back over. There are lots of other tips and tricks.

Mr. Mrzed's suggestion of the DE89 is a very good one. It's a fine razor. If you like history and antique cars consider an antique razor. Gillette tech, superspeed or adjustable.

Invested in the DE89LBL and WOW!! Completely different experience! Used the Art of Shaving sandlewood pre-shave, cream, and after shave and my skin feels amazing. Went three passes, (WTG, Cross grain, and ATG) only a few nicks and they were minor, and very little irritation. Have some in the back from not having the angle right but minor. I'm convinced that this was a VERY good choice. Mach 3 makes me head feel so bad and the skin is on fire all day almost. Going through a razor sample pack to see which blades work best for me. So far, not a fan of Derby kinda dulled half way into pass 2.

Derby is not a good choice (place to start) for many folks.  Glad it's worming for you. Many folks don't take too it without practice.

I second that. I've done a few shaves with Derby blades in my shavette and they don't stay sharp for long.
