Could you get a nice head shave by using baby oil as a lather?
« on: October 21, 2014, 11:27:03 AM »
Hi guys, i noticed that when i use gillete foam or soap on my head my razors get clogged very quickly although i consistently wash them out during use. Furthermore this effects my shave as it makes it more difficult due to the razor constantly sliding and not cutting anything.

Ive researched on the net and many shavers have stated that oils make effective lathers, and are better for your skin than foams. Some also states it gives a quicker shave.

Whats your take on this guys.

Shave Secret (Walmart) is one that quite a few of the people in here have used. I use it under shave cream with no problems, but, I am led to believe that it is meant to be used as a "shave cream", a stand alone lubricant for the head/face but that it clogs the blades pretty severely. I would imagine that any oil would have the same effect.

Have you tried Cremo? Its a cream, it doesn't foam. I use it and it gives a very good smooth shave without irritation. It took some getting use to as there is no foam and you can feel where you are shaving more which helps if your shaving the back of your head without a mirror.

Baby oil will clog pores and cause problems.

I've used baby oil under shave gel ever since I've shaved my head and have done fine. It seems to help with the shine.

I've tried shaving oil and found it didn't give as much cushion as a good soap or cream. Plenty of slip, but no cushion. I've also tried using virgin unprocessed coconut oil, just to see if it worked. Same result. Though I imagine you could use an oil as a pre-shave.

Head Slick is a decent product... Doesn't foam but is an opaque soapy liquid that has menthol and glycerin in it.

I've also tried the Alba Botanica creams from Whole Foods, and found they clogged the razor like crazy. Better than oil, but still very clogging.

I've used Shave Secret as well as plain baby oil, which I felt worked better. Both are a bit messy though and leave a mixture of stubble and oil on the tub, sink or wherever you shave. The smell of baby oil is a strange smell.

Cremo cream works well, it's rather moisturizing and many bottle have a Try Me Free rebate tag on them, so it's practically free (minus the cost of a stamp, envelope and printing out the rebate form... plus 6-8 weeks waiting.... then taking rebate check to bank to deposit...)

Lately I've been using either Nivea shave gel when I'm in a rush, or the Body Shops Maca root shave cream that must be lathered up with a shaving brush, for more relaxing, slower shaves.

I've used both Shave Secret and King of Shaves shaving oil, and I like both of them.  Shave Secret is cheaper, though.  Can't speak to baby oil, however.
