I've finally done it!
« on: September 19, 2014, 03:22:18 PM »
So after joining the site a few weeks ago and posting a few times to help build myself up to it, and get some great support (cheers again guys!) I ordered some clippers which arrived earlier this week. I said to myself Friday would be the day.

I got home, and told the girlfriend what I had planned. Which came as a shock, as it's the first time I've mentioned it. She didn't believe me, when I got the clippers out Shen realised I wasn't joking. She was worried I would cut it too short, but I assured her I wouldnt...

I started by cutting it down steadily. First to 15mm, then to 10mm. I showed her, and she was shocked at how short it was. I told her I was going to tidy it up, and the next time I came down I'd cut it to 1mm. She was a bit shocked, and is still adjusting, but She's reacted positively which has been great!

So far I think I like it, still getting used to it though... But going to stick with it! Still can't believe I've done it to be honest...

Definitely glad I've done it though! I know it's not completely sly, but it's pretty close, as close as I wanted to go for now. Got the weekend to adjust, then back to work!

Thanks for everyone's help and encouragement guys!

Excellent. Congratulations on taking control and moving forward.

The first few days may be a bit disorienting ... particularly when you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror or the reflection on a window. You'll become accustomed to it very quickly.

And kudos to your girlfriend for being open-minded. That's impressive as well.

Took me a long time to get used to the new me in the mirror, but I still liked it.

Ran with the very short buzz for a few months ... then got the razor out.  I like that look and feel best.

Take your time.

Good on you!  We would like to see some photos so that we can offer you some opinions/encouragement.

And yes, the first couple of days can be a bit disconcerting - almost like when you get your first tattoo!  But you know what is equally amazing? - that it only takes about 2 to 3 days when you don't even notice it anymore!  Truly, by day 3 you notice that you are using the mirror to shave your face and didn't even notice your new haircut!

Funny too, it works the same way with the people at work; by day 3 they see your new haircut as the normal you!

Thanks for the comments guys!

You're right, I've caught my reflection a few times and found it a bit strange (unfamiliar, rather!)

The girlfriend said this morning that my forehead doesn't look as big now haha. I think she means My hair loss doesn't look as bad, I don't look like I'm going bald, I just don't have any hair!

My grandparents made an unscheduled visit earlier too, and were a bit shocked. They didn't like it, but my grandad is bald and has been sporting a combover since he went bald (if me, my brother and dad are anything to go by that will has been his early 20's), so I won't be taking his opinion to heart haha! They brought some old family with them too, and the first comment was "you said he had lovely, curly blonde hair!" (That was before it receded and went thin and wispy) , I just brushed it off and said "well it's gone now!"

We went out shopping then. It was the first time I've been out in public for a very long time and I've felt confident and haven't been as worried about what people think, it felt great. I felt like I got less looks (though before my anxiety probably made me think people paid more attention than they actually did).

Another success story.

Your girlfriend is correct (your forehead doesn't look so big). Without the hairline to provide that line of distinction, foreheads tend to become far less prominent.

You are well on your way to feeling much more carefree and confident. It is, truly, the best way to live when it comes to hair.

Again, congrats to you and kudos to your girlfriend. Her attitude is so important in helping you incorporate this change into your being.
