From what I heard, he had put together 20 years of sobriety and then fell off of the wagon. He had recently been released from a rehab center.
Alcoholism is a vicious, insidious, incurable disease. If you don't feed it alcohol, it asks for drugs. If you don't feed it drugs, it asks for suicide - it will do anything to escape the real world with which it cannot cope.
I have seen many people die of alcoholism suicide.
Take solace in the fact that the example of Mr. Williams' death might just give courage to one other alcoholic to control his disease for just one more day.
