What if you looked like this guy?

Ok, I know there could be a big argument over this issue but I believe there is a difference in a regular person feeling a little self conscience and having a birth defect like this guy.

You guys(and gal) have put up some great posts about the pros and cons of cosmetic surgery.

For me, Unless it was to correct a physical deformity or handicap, I would never get a needle or knife to my body to look better.

Exercise,good eatin,limiting the vices and regular sex is all the human body needs to be in peak condition.

Totally agree with you Lance & JDog.

The thing is that those who get some "work done" often seem to end up going back for more & more "work" ... it seems to be quite addictive for those who are into it.

I've no problem of course with people like the guy in the pic getting cosmetic surgery to correct an obvious (& socially debilitating) flaw.

The thing I have against it is that it's yet another "option" available only to the " very well off". It seems to me that not content with all the advantages that they already enjoy - they now want to even be able to buy "beauty" for themselves too - perhaps in centuries to come (if we as a race survive that long) you'll be able to instantly tell somebody's wealth by how "physically perfect" they look - you already see it sometimes - some of these old celebrities now in their seventies but with the faces of thirty year olds - it's kind of weird!

On the other hand - if it continues to get cheaper & cheaper & more & more people go for it ... can you imagine the pressure on people to conform if they don't fit the mold of this supposed ideal look .... we know all about that anyways ... if we think the hair transplant business plays on men's insecurities about hairloss now ... well we probably ain't seen nothing yet!

On the other hand, like Vin & MB said - I suppose it is a bit hypocritical of us to pass judgment & actually if someone fancies going for a bit of lypo-suction or a chin tuck I've really got no problem with that at all  ... it's just the more sinister long term implications of it I am not sure about!

OK  - Got me a coffee & I was thinking about my last post & I was thinking well if someone suddenly invented a pill which reversed mpb if I'm being honest I would certainly think about buying it (assuming I could afford to & that it wasn't absurdly expensive) so I really have no right to criticize anyone else.

It's not that I dislike being sly but I have to admit ... it would be great to have a choice about whether to be bald or not & certainly when I was in the early stages of mpb I would've killed for a pill which would've made it stop! That got me wondering .... if such a pill were to suddenly appear how many other guys on here would go for it? Remember ... it doesn't mean you can't go sly .... just gives you a choice in the matter so only really applies to the mpb guys ....

 .... any takers?

Great post shy on the alterations of a body.  I totally agree with everything you said. 

Also, good question about hair growth pills.  As for myself I would have to pass.  For two main reasons.  #1 - I have compared pictures of myself back in the day when I had a full head of hair and now without it.  I just like the way I look better without hair.  #2 - I don't want to have to take a drug unless it's absolutely necessary.  What I mean is for a health reason or something related.

Absolutely.  And the people who keep going back for more and more work usually end up looking worse than they did before, though they themselves may not realize it (think Michael Jackson).

I have no problem with people "buying beauty" for themselves.  It's their money to spend however they please.   In most cases, though, they just end up making themselves look worse. Most of these aging celebrities look grotesque or silly.  I think the key is to not try and look younger than you are, but to try to look good for your actual age.

I wouldn't go to any of these extremes, either.  I was thinking more along the lines of fixing a flaw that bothers you, as opposed to a head-to-toe surgical makeover.  I'm not sure I would do it either - I'm not really interested in inflicting unnecessary pain on myself.   But if something is bothering you and fixing it makes you feel better about yourself,  why not?

Good question...I would.  I don't mind the sly look (although I still shave it with no guard, not to the skin yet), but if I am being totally honest, I think I liked myself better with hair, or as you said, at least the option to grow it out, like over the winter and then shave it for the summer.  MPB is hard for young guys to deal with, I think it is a control issue, as you have no control over your appearnace constantly changing with the more hair you lose - hence the shaving for me - it's just gone and will look the same everyday

I am totally against male makeovers. Men as a rule age better than women so I think a man has to be extremely vain and insecure to do such a thing.Men look better as they get older anyway.They look distinguished. I'm glad i feel that way because if I was that vain it would be hard for me to submit to that because I'm afraid of needles. I just had a root canal and I was acting like I was going to the gallows.LOL. The one good thing about needles in the mouth is that they numb you first so you don't feel the needle.The ones in the arm suck.I wish they could numb your arm so you don't feel the shot. Bad enough people hate going for surgery when it's for health reasons and I can't imagine anyone going for elective surgery for vanity. Also about the choice of having your hair back I would jump at the chance.Even though I look ok with the close cut,I'm really making the best of it. I'd like to have my own hair back if I could.

I think any type of surgery which is "not needed" is just excess and shows how imbalanced people's mindsets are. If you have a birth defect then that is something that needs to be corrected but anything that is over and above should not happen. Anybody seen Mickey Rourke as a prime example? A perfectly good looking man who is now just a badly drawn cartoon!
