I usually go when I have more than a week's growth and to get a beard trim.....99% of the time, however, the barber will not get it as smooth as you can do it own your own....but it's a nice treat to do once ever so often.

Man, I love getting a barber shave.
If the barber gives the full treatment, it is a really pleasurable experience.
But like Sir Harry said, if the barber is timid with the razor, the shave does not get me as smooth as I can get when I do it myself. For some odd reason, every barber but two I have used got really close/smooth on my face and throat, but did not do the same with my scalp.

What they said, hehe! I do like going to a barber for a shave every now and then. It can be a very pampering experience, but it is generally only as close or even less close as I can do myself. It is very relaxing usually. But not something, given the cost, that I would choose to do more often than as a special treat every now and then.

I have been to several barbers for periodic headshaves, and all the experiences have been good. In fact, the barber can get my scalp smoother than I can, due to the shaving expertise, the usual scalp prep (hot towel, etc.), and the high-quality razor blade. It is a great experience. It is, however, expensive if done frequently. Also, now that I am shaving my own head every other day, I wouldn't feel that I had gotten my money's worth at the barbershop now. If, for some reason, I neglect shaving my head for more than six days (which is the cut-off point for me; after that, I have to have a buzzcut first for my blade to scrape away the stubble), I'll get a refresher shave at the barber's. Some "gentlemen's lounges," while offering deluxe service, also offer deluxe prices! I have found a barber nearby who will give me a good headshave for only $16 plus tip--a great bargain. He'll be my "shave it back down again" barber if needed.

Same here. I only go to the barber if it has been more than about a week since my last shave. I have one here in town that will do it for $14 plus tip, which is good. I try not to make a habit of it, because even that adds up.

So far, only once. It is a treat, but expensive as regular maintenance. The time I went it was a gift certificate from my kids for father's day. Got another one fro Christmas, and I am just waiting for the time to use it. My avitar photo is after my barbershop headshave last year.

$14 plus tip, which is good
Good nothing, that is incredible! The least I have paid was thirty plus tip for a shave that was less than mediocre.
Wish I lived in your area, sir.

Depending on which barber I go to, it varies...but the max I shell out is $25 including tip, and that's with a beard and mustache shape-up and/or trim.....City barbers tend to be cheaper in most cases I find.

I've had a barber shave a few times and it is a relasing experience.. If you happen to be in India or Myanmar or even China it will cost you about $1 to $3.

Since I only go BBC at certain times of the year, I usually get my first shave at the barber shop. And if I go a week without a shave, I like to have the barber get me back on track.
As so many have said, most barbers don't get you as smooth as you get yourself. It's odd, because I always find a barber shop FACE shave much closer than a home shave, but I guess they have way more experience at shaving faces. But even if the shave isn't perfect, the pampering with hot towels, warm lather, etc. is a nice treat to give yourself.
The one place where I have gotten an unbelievably close head shave was at Art of Shaving. They use all sorts of pre-shave products, they do multiple shaves, etc. Smoothest shave I'd ever had and no stubble for a day and a half. But at $35 plus tip, it's a bit pricey. But when you want a little extra pampering treat, it's a great way to indulge yourself...
