Hello from Mississippi
« on: February 19, 2014, 09:41:06 PM »
Hi everyone. My name is Daniel and I live in Hattiesburg, MS. I'm 28 years old and attend the University of Southern Mississippi. I've had a bald spot on the middle/top of my head for years now that I've been trying to ignore and just couldn't do it anymore. I've thought about shaving my head before, but never had the courage to do it.

I still can't really explain what happened, but I just kinda broke last night and just did it (as you can see by my profile picture). I spent a couple of hours really researching the best way to do it, since if I'm going to do something then I'm going to do it right. My search led me here, which is where I learned everything that I would need to do. I buzzed my head down, bought a headblade ATX (since it's my first time I wanted to try and minimize my blood loss), and got some lotion that has sunscreen in it. All in all it took me about an hour to do from start to finish. I definitely surprised people today because I didn't tell anybody, in the fear that they'd talk me out of it. So I went from the picture below (taken a few days ago) to my profile picture.

I'm going to try the thirty day challenge and see how it goes. I've gotten several compliments, a few wtf looks, a couple of stares, and LOTS of "why'd you decide to shave your head?" questions. I've actually had a couple of friends tell me that I, "beat (them) to the punch" and that they've wanted to shave their heads for awhile now.

Anyways, I'm glad to be here and I look forward to learning more and talking with everyone.

Welcome, Daniel! Looks great, enjoy the forum

P.S. Spent several weekend drills, deployments and annual trainings out your way at Camp Shelby.

Oh yeah? Do you ever come out this way still? Camp Shelby isn't a bad drive at all from Hattiesburg.

I retired in July after 23 years of service, but I live roughly two hours away....I make a trip up there once or twice a year to go to the PX just to get out of Louisiana for a while....but my unit still drills up there, however.

Congratulations, Daniel.

I also did not tell anyone for fear they would try to talk me out of it. Glad the reactions have been positive for you. You probably will find that few will mention it again as the initial surprise will be over.

Welcome to the board, sir.

I do not recall telling anyone beforehand either, but I had been cutting my hair very close.  Congratulations on the move, and good luck with the 30 days.

Hi, Daniel--You look good with hair and without hair.  Since you were developing a bald spot anyway, I applaud your taking control of the situation.  Keep us posted.

Welcome, Daniel.   You did the right thing by not telling anyone first.  It's your decision and they can live with it like they would anything else in life.  There will always be opinions on both sides, so the most important opinion(YOURS)  carries the most weight... O0

Welcome Daniel ...

It's been a week ... I'm guessing you are feeling more comfortable, as are the people around you.

Post back and let us know how it's going. Any surprises?
