harder to tan?
« on: July 24, 2007, 02:17:00 PM »
Ok, newly sly here. I know my avatar shows some stubble but I did take the sly plunge last week. Anyways, my question: Is the dome harder to maintain a tan than your face? I mean as long as you keep it shaved and it gets sun. It's not like the scalp resists tanning more than the rest of your body does it? The only reason I could think of is it seems yor scalp may lose more dead skin (I am not just talking about dandruff) Anybody have any thoughts on this?

First off UGA, I am definitely no expert since I just went sly on June 8.  However, I have not noticed a more difficult time tanning my head.  It sort of blends with my face.  I have MPB.  Maybe the area where hair would be seems to fade maybe a little more quickly.

No, it should be able to tan the same , once it gets caught up to your face...

I do find (and on the really rare occasion..well usually never) when i have some stubble THAT will make tanning uneven and a lot less that the face or neck..

keep it smooth bro and the tan will come...just remember the sunscreen...the tan will happen soon enough! O0

Hey, Bulldog, I think I welcomed you on another thread, but if not I'll say it again. Welcome.  This Thursday will mark 3 months for me.  Kinda seems like I've always been SLY by now.  Anyways, the first couple of months I really noticed that I could still see a faint line where my hairline (what there was of it anyways) used to be.  I just noticed a couple of mornings ago that I think I actually have somewhat of an even skin tone.  It just took awhile.  So to answer your question... It did seem that the scalp tanned slower.  But HEY...It's only been covered by some type of hair for like your WHOLE LIFE.... Maybe that could be the reason??? :/O

Ugameister...

I have found that the scalp is indeed a bit more resistant to tanning than other sun-seasoned areas of the face & body.

Like say during the winter when other skin loses the tan....it comes back quite readily come summer and sun exposure.

I'm not a doctor, but my theory is that the virgin scalp that--in most cases--has been covered with hair since birth and has not needed the melanin (the natural pigment that darkens the skin to protect it from sunburn) takes more gradual exposure to trigger the body's response to develop added melanin up there.

Does this make sense to any of you medically trained SBG's out there?

I think we ALL know that the skin is WAY different on a freshly shorn noggin as evidenced by that numb, gooey, fishbelly feeling you get when you FIRST shave.

Early on, when I got sun, my face got good color, but the shaved area of the noggin got blotchy-pink.  Now, after nearly 7 months of shaving, my noggin is getting what I like to call "seasoned"....and is just now starting to "match" my other skin.

I agree with Robmeister, just keep the sun tan lotion on it, i have gone from factor 30 down to 15 and 12  and just cover up after a bit and i am sure your dome will catch up with our face.
I just takes time.

Hey Uga,

Use a Sunscreen of at least 30+ on your face and head for an even tan. Make sure that it provides both UVA & UVB protection. You also want to make sure to use one that will not sweat off. I created Bald Guyz Sunscreen SPF 30+ so you can tan and be totally protected.

Baldies need protection 365 days a year!

I think Robmeister hit it on the head  ;D  I've noticed the lack of tan too.  It may also be part of the shadow effect.

I've been sly for a month and I still look weird. It's good to know that it takes over three months to catch up.

I'm one that is very lucky  to work in the outdoors most of the day, with the exception of getting in and out of my company truck to drive from locate to locate, so my exposure to the sun is more than others but less than those that are totally in the sun all day.

My head has tanned very nicely and caught up to my face rather rappidly making me look like I have been Sly all my life.  I'm going to be laying out to get the rest of me tan.. the parts of me that are not exposed to normal every day sun life  ::)  I still have the shorts and T-Shirt (farmers tan) on the upper body, and since I will going back to Hawaii in March I want everything to match  !B@

You can always try sunless tanning lotion to build the base, then layout with a lower SPF on the scalp, higher on the face.  My virgin scalp was whiter than Christmas, but I worked outside for the weekend w/o a hat and it tanned it out, plus I drove around in my convertible Miata.
