Head shaving question....
« on: January 14, 2014, 07:54:05 PM »
Hi guys,

I posted a topic a few weeks ago about wanting to shave my head due to MPB, but I was worried about my head shape. I received many supportive replies which helped me out tremendously to get over the depression I was experiencing about my looks. I have another question that maybe you guys can help me with. Whenever I get a haircut and get the back of my hair cut really short, I get a few pimple like bumps in my hairline down by my neck. It's not super bad or anything, like bad razor bumps, but I will get three or four bumps, some can even be big. I'm kind of worried that when I shave this could get worse. I know it will be way more obvious with more scalp showing. Have any of you guys had to deal with this or know of a way to deal with this. Losing hair is bad enough. I surely don't want to have to rock the horseshoe to hide some stupid bumps. Thanks in advance for any replies.

What you described sounds like ingrown hairs. Shaving can cause them, but you usually will see them decrease in frequency the more you shave and the more the skin toughens.

Whenever I get one, I use a cotton ball to apply a little rubbing alcohol to the area a few times a day. Within two or three days, the problem dries up and goes away.

I also seem to have that problem. But it has reduced since the first time I shaved.

In the beginning, you can try shaving it in intervals of 3-4 days so that your ingrown hairs can work their way out before you pick the razor up.

Exfoliating your skin really helps, especially if you have a really flaky scalp like me. Doing this probably removes some of the dead skin stuck in your pores that might cause your hair to curl inwards.

I hope that helps :)

You're going to get a few in the beginning...I've been shaving bald permanently for almost six years and I still get them if I miss steps in my routine. A good thing to invest in is some Bump Patrol (sold at WalMart) They clear my bumps up within 24-48 hours on average.

I didn't know you could get ingrown hairs from just going clipper short. I tend to get them when I get the back cut down with a #2. Only one or two are bad, the rest are just small bumps. Thanks for the advice tho.

When you start shaving the head, you might want to shave strictly with the grain for the first month or so, until your scalp toughens up.
