Shaved heads in New York
« on: October 07, 2013, 02:17:56 PM »
Just returned to Australia after spending (among other things) a week in New York.

It was quite startling how many shaved heads I saw while exploring the city.  Young, old, executives, doormen at hotels, laborers - I estimated about 5-10% of men had shaved heads.  Interestingly the number of obvious tourists with new shiny scalps was staggering - they must have caught the bug.  At my hotel over half the bellmen were shaved.  Among the native American population the proportion was higher.

I was waiting for a bus outside a barber's shop and saw two men enter with hair and leave shaved.

I felt very much at home.

Shaved heads are very common in New York - and in the Northeast Corridor (Washington DC to Boston) for that matter.  The look became popular with men in the finance industry a few years back, but it isn't confined to that group.

I'm going to say that's Grant's Tomb, though I'm not positive that it isn't Columbus Circle!

Actually it's at Belvedere Castle, inside Central Park. Good guesses, though.

I loved New York, growing up bang in the middle of central London, a lot of my friends used to feel like being a tourist when they came here and how mind blowing London can be. I'd never really felt that till new York and I loved it. I hope to go back next year.

I'd also love to visit Australia. A lot of my friends live there and given the chance I would love to live there.

It's true, plenty of us Sly guys here in NYC. I see it more and more every day and I love it!

I agree, it is popular throughout most of the Northeast, however. Was up in Cape Cod a little while ago and I swear it was 50/50 sly land when I was there.

As npsbg said the surprisingly big group with shaved heads was the suits in the financial and legal areas of the city.

Agreed. Although I live in one of the other four boroughs, I live in and like to go to Manhattan for the same reason.
Once upon a time. The End.
