new here and considering going BBC
« on: October 02, 2013, 05:54:05 AM »
Greetings,

My name is Alex. I have been lurking the past few weeks and finally decided to join.

I'm 27 years old and have a thick head of curly hair. No signs of thinning yet. I've always received many compliments for my locks and I do like the way I look with my hair grown out. I've usually worn it 3 to 4 inches long my entire life. However despite the look, curly hair is a nightmare to maintain and for the past year I've cut it considerably shorter, usually a #4 or #5 buzz cut. I'm becoming more accustomed to short hair and despite pressure from friends and family to grow it out again, I usually get frustrated with it and end up buzzing it.

This past summer when I was on vacation I buzzed it down with a #2 guard, which is the shortest I've ever gone (my profile pic depicts this haircut).  I loved the freedom of having my hair so short but it was also a bit jarring for me and I know my family would hate it, so I grew it back a bit now. Anyway that summer haircut got me thinking about how I would look with a fully shaved head and that's how I discovered this site.

I also wear a beard and I really like the way it looks with a lot of sly guys and I'm wondering if I could pull off the look. I haven't been able to shake the temptation to shave my head since though I'm terrified of how shocking it would actually be and how long it would take to grow back if I hate it... Any thoughts or encouragements? Do you think the sly look would suit me?

If you've got the itch, scratch it. A complete shave will grow out to a #1 buzz cut length in a week and to a #2 in two weeks.

You have the face and head to pull off a baldy but the choice is ultimately yours. Welcome aboard.

Welcome, Alex! You certainly have the beard to complement a shaved head...and you have a nice head shape for sly....As you stated, it's worth a shot, and if you don't like it, you can always go back to where you are now or back to the long curly hair you described in your post. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Alex, I'm BBC and love it. Once I thought about shaving it off, I too could not stop thinking about it. It was consuming a lot of my time, and I just shaved it off. It was such a relief to finally do it. I have grown it back twice, and after growing it for 14 days, I could do a flattop, so it grows back quickly. I think you would look awesome sly with the beard.
Bald by choice, and loving it!

Welcome, Alex.  You have a great beard.  I like the contrast a beard has with a bald head.  You will rock it for sure, if you decide to do it O0

Alex,I too had hair that was hard to control and maintain, which was part of my decison to go for short buzz cuts and eventually to shave.  My hair was not curly enough to call curly, but not straight enough to style with lots of products and time.  When I was your age, short hair was not nearly as main-stream as it is now, and a shaved head was unusual. So it was not until my 40's that I started with a buzz cut.  Today, that is not the case, shaved heads are common.  If you have the urge, give it a try.  if you do not like it, it will grow back.  It may, however, take some time to adjust to the look, so the normal advice is to give it at least 30 days.  Family and friends will take longer to adjust.

Welcome Alex!

I think you would rock the sly look. I know ALL about the family not caring for it, my family is like that (I have a couple of cousins who complemented me on the sly look though).

With the beard it will complement you well when you decide to try it. Definitely give it 30 days. I had shaved once a while ago (after getting a short #1 all over) and due to other issues I let it grow out. Now those issues are behind me (hopefully for good) and I can enjoy being sly (still needs some skin color but that will come in time).

Good luck and keep us posted! We're here to support all the guys sly and on the fence!

Welcome Alex. I think your hair looks great cropped close, as you have it in the pic. It's a great look with the beard. You should give the blade shave a try at least once to see how you feel, and if you like it.
I also agree with the guys when they say once you get the thought in your head to shave, it will always be on your mind until you decide to do it.
Give it a shot, let us know what you think.  O0

I am also bbc and love it. I think you can pull off the sly look and with the beard. I started shaving for the look of it. I was buzzing my hair shorter and shorter an I got curious about shaving. I just kept thinking about what I would look like shaved especially since I was clipper shaving at one point. So the itch was there and I finally gave in. Everyone likes my bald head and I am more comfortable with it shaved. If you got the itche just shave it and get it over with. After the end of a week you will be the equivalent to a #1 buzzcut.

There are so many advantages to being shaved that it just becomes too practical to give up. No waiting at the barbers, having to find a good barber, worrying about bed head in the am, figuring out what kind of cut you want etc, dealing with a bad hair day.

Just try it. Your hair is short enough.

But like we are saying to get rid of the itch just scratch.

Alex, I see you have a lot of responses today.

I'm BBC.  I've been shaving my head for nearly 2 years now. I love it.  So does everyone else.  A few folks took a little time to adjust, but a bald head is beautiful, especially with a beard.

You'll rock the look.  I hope you do it and keep it.  There is nothing to be afraid of. You'll look great with a BBC head.

I can understand why you want to keep it short and I'd say keep it as it is. The length suits you.

You have hair, why get rid! if you do choose to do it, it'll be back to a buzz within a couple of days so it's not a life or death decision. If it's something you fancy then do it but it looks great the way it is and you really have no reason to.

Agree with. I guess it is more of a hair envy thing, I would nvr be bald on choice. I do understand where you are coming from though..I think a buzz makes sense. I also also that guys with good shaped heads that did a 0 on the clippers looked pretty sweet because the hair shadow is still there and you can see that the hairline is correct. Like stated no matter what you decide, it will grow back. It grows back fast so it is not a big deal.

The best part of your situation is you can have it both ways! Why not try it - if you don't like it, it'll be back before you know it!
