Hey, I'm new to head shaving with a straight but I want to give it a go. I've read around, and have heard that the essentials are;
-Straight razor, preferably stainless steel
-Leather and canvas strop
-4k and 8k honing stones
Assuming I don't damage my straight, would I be able to maintain the same razor for a life time with these items?
Welcome! I own a straight razor as well, though I have not used it in several months. It sounds like you have all the tools to maintain your straight razor, but storing the blades in baby oil after use can also keep the blades sharp and rust-free. Enjoy the forum and keep us posted on how your experiment with those items go!
Will do m8, hopefully I don't sustain any wounds lol.
I'd be interested too. I have a straight, I did a few little test areas and got cuts (no worse than any 'fancy new' razor has...) and wanted to read up more from some of the guys on SBG with more straight edge knowledge...
I bought it for doing the neck but I also want to try it on the dome, but I am leery of cutting it up - the blade is eye-poppingly SHARP!
I have gotta straight razor also and why oh why make life complicated and messy leave these superb pieces of gearto te professionals to use on yourscalp . I became sly again yesterday, a turkish barber shaved my head for £10 .00, hot towels, massage and eye brow trim the lt .
My advice if you do it yourself use a safty razor such as a mach 3 .leave the straight razor in the cupboard.
