Roku
« on: July 30, 2013, 06:01:48 PM »
Hey guys!  I am thinking of getting a Roku.  But I have a older television, that still plays great, that only has a Coaxial input.  I know that Roku needs those RCA inputs.  But I do have cable service and all channels are digital now.  So I have a small set top box that also has these same inputs that newer TVs have.  So would it work to buy a basic Roku and hook it up to my cable box?  I would like to have one of these things and not have to buy a new TV.  Has anyone here done this kind of setup for their Roku before?  To be honest, the "customer service chat" on the Roku website was not helpful.  I also have tried Googling it and still have not had a great answer.  But I trust you guys for the most part!  So what has been your experience?

I'm pretty sure it needs to be connected directly to the TV and not the cable box. And it probably requires an HDMI cable, which an older TV won't have an input for.

It looks as if the Roku LT and Roku HD models have composite (RCA) outputs as well as HDMI, but none have coax.

But you can buy an inexpensive RF modulator to convert composite to coax. (Disclaimer: never tried this myself.)

And Razor is correct in that you'd need to connect it to the TV (or to a video capable receiver that in turn connects to the TV). I don't know of any cable boxes that have an aux pass-thru input. (Doesn't mean that one may not exist, but it'd be a rare beast.)

I haven't tried it with the Roku specifically, but  have used an RF modular in the past to go from composite to coaxial and it worked just fine. I think I still have the RF modulator at home. I can try it tonight to see if it works with the Roku.
