SunBurn
« on: July 02, 2007, 08:55:32 PM »
I know that this has been mentioned before, and we are all aware of the need to be careful about getting too much sun.  But, I had just begun to feel comfortable about knowing how much sun my dome could withstand w/o being sunburned; then this weekend we had some really rainy weather.  During one of the few breaks in the rain, I spent about an hour out in really cloudy weather.  I assumed that I was alright because of the clouds and the fact that I had already spent quite a bit of time in the sun this summer w/o getting any significant amount of sunburn.  I felt last night that I had maybe had a touch of redness, so I put on some moisture gel and went to bed.  This morning when I put the razor to my head....ouch.  And all day today I kept getting the comments about "didn't I know that I needed to wear a cap now".  Funny how many people think they are your mother and are constantly telling me  "you do know that you need to wear a cap now, don't you???"

Lesson for me is to never be outside w/o some type of SPF on the dome.   Also, I need a better come back for all of the people who continually want to act like my mother.

I get the hat/cap comments in the wintertime.  I have always hated wearing hats and will hold out for as long as I possibly can in the wintertime before I will break down and wear one.

As for the sunburn, as an extemely fair-skinned person, I learned many years ago that you can still get a bad sunburn when there is cloud cover.  I've never gotten a really bad burn on the dome, but I have gotten a couple of minor ones when I went out without a cap or sunscreen for what I thought would only be a few minutes but ended up being much longer.  You don't even realize you're burned until you put the razor on your scalp, as you experienced.

Also, if you wear a ball cap for protection, remember that you can still get burned below the edge of the cap and through the cut-out hole in the back.  That makes for a very interesting pattern on the back of your head.  I had that happen a couple of times when I was doing yard work.   I also saw another sly guy on the train this morning with that same pattern on the back of his head.

I really hate wearing a cap and will go out of my way to avoid it.  I have, as of lately begun to leave a ballcap in my car for those times when I get caught without some type of other protection.  I have also bought an extra bottle of sunsreen for my car.

I've recently started to wonder what I will do this winter.  I'm sure the dome will be somewhat colder, even w/o the little bit of hair covering that I had before.

Razor is correct.  As a former lifeguard, I can attest to the fact that:

CLOUDS minus SUNSCREEN = SUNBURN

What is so great about being shaved is that you can easily put sunscreen on without having it get in whatever amount of hair you used to have.  Since I work in an office, I don't worry about putting any on because all I do is go back and forth to my car.  I do have a hat just in case, but having some sunscreen is probably a good idea if you occasionally might be exposed for any period of time.  Sorry that happened to you... live and learn.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

Well  SlyinKC, you're not the only one that did this recently.  Earlier this week I worked from home because the city was here to fix my sewer line.  I went out there and talked to the guy for about 1 hour and completely forgot to put on sunscreen before I did.  That was all the sun needed to give me a nice little burn followed by a nice little peel.  I've had to wear plenty of lotion these last couple of days to hide the fact that my head is peeling.

Happened to me too a few days back. I usually wear a baseball cap but having been inspired by some of the guys here who say they never or rarely wear hats out I decided to go without for a while - I went over to Calais for the day & really didn't notice that I was getting burnt until we got back & a friend mentioned that my head was quite red. That night I kept feeling my head & it felt really hot to the touch.  Sure enough a couple of days later I had one really really badly peeling head .... t'wasn't a pretty site .... I looked like I had some particularly unsightly disease until it had all peeled.

Guess I learnt the hard way .....

Thanks for this thread...believe it is a reminder from a higher power as I am going to spend the most time in the sun, since going SLY, today with the family at Six Flags Great America. Think I'll try to keep the hat off, but on reserve in the car while utilizing some HeadShade Sunscreen. I have others, but am thinking the small bottle is perfect for my travels of the day.  Question to you is, will the SPF 15 be enough? :-\

Arnie, I use the SPF 15 for the face and head.  I have a small bottle that I can carry in my pocket.  I just try to be concious of whether my dome is getting a little red and reapply as needed.

I also have quite a few extra Royals baseball caps.  Would be glad to send you one if you would like.  Several colors to choose from.  My favorite is "Royal Blue"!!  J/K :*))

Great thread slyinkc and a great reminder that even when you don't think so, the sun can cause skin damage. I do not have fair skin and darken very quickly but this does not mean to go out without protection.  Even with a heavy tan you are at risk of burn and damage, maybe more so because it is not as readily visible.

Paul,  I must say that I did get a good laugh out of that last one.  And yes, they have stunk pretty badly in the last few years.  Still enjoy watching em play.  Most of the time anyway.  There have been those games where you've wanted put a bag over your head as you're leaving the game.  Oh, well.  I only go when I get free tickets.  Can't beat a free night out at the ball park!!
