What products to use for sensitive skin?
« on: May 18, 2013, 02:56:13 PM »
Hey all,

I need to buy a new razor and cream/gel to go on my head because every time I shave my head is getting irritated. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for skin that gets irritated easily. I'd like having a shaved head much better if it didn't hurt so bad afterwards.  :XX

For starters ditch the canned shave gel/cream if you haven't already. Now get a badger shave brush and a hypoallergenic soap. Switch your shaving technique, try shave only with the grain and not against. Pay attention to your blade cycle and don't forget to pop in a new blade on a regular basis.

You don't mention how long you have been shaving.  Some irritation is normal at first until the scalp becomes accustomed to being shaved on a regular basis.

By all means, ditch the canned shaving cream.  It just doesn't give enough moisture for a good shave.  Personally, I like HeadSlick, but other guys will give you good advice on other soaps and creams.

Also, as suggested by greatnessinc, use a fresh blade and don't try to get too much mileage out of your blades.  Hacking at your scalp with a dull blade will cause a lot of irritation.

One last suggestion, if you are new to shaving, you could try a good wet/dry electric shaver.  The good ones give a close shave with little or no irritation.

Stay away from anything in a can. They use butane and propane as propellants. Just look at the ingredient list for proof.

Seriously, propane and butane on skin? No wonder so many men get irritation. Then Gilette turns around to sell you lotions and potions for irritation. It's like a pot dealer that also sells chocolate bars.

Look to soaps (hard or cream) that wet face shavers use.

Your local drug store may have brands like Proraso and VDH that work well.

Personally, I use JM Frasers, Proraso, Real Shaving Company, VDH. I have used Body Shop Maca Root in the past and it is not bad.

Then get some old barbershop after shave like Boosters, Pinaud and so on.

You will find these products to have simple ingredient lists using time tested ingredients.

I guarantee your irritation will disappear when you stop using harsh chemicals.

Good advice by the guys. DITCH THE CAN!!!!! Get some nice shave soaps. I like RazoRock soaps and I LOVE Cella. You'll need a decent brush for lathering and applying. This small change will make shaving a GREAT experience.

I also really, really like the BEE Bald line of products. I use their exfoliator, after shave cream, and "heal" product. All three are excellent! Don't be put of  by their prices..... the products are premium products and a little goes a long way. Plus they are a Forum sponsor and run specials for members.
