New to all this
« on: May 14, 2013, 03:47:30 AM »
Hello guys.

This is my first post and wondered if I could get some pointers in what I do next.

I have been buzzing my head with a wahl balding buzzer for about a year or so now and even though it gets pretty close I have been wondering about using a razor.

I come accross the headblades and just think that it would be so much easier to use one of them then to buzz my head every two days that I am doing at the minute. The reason I'm so curious as to what it would look like.

Problem is that I don't want a shine once I have shaved and would prefer a shadow.

So couple of questions really:-
- Headblade ATX or Headblade sport?
- Does the matt lotion actually work and does what it says?
- what other products would you recommend?

I'm off on holiday in about a month so going to plan on doing it while there.

First, welcome.  Nice place to join the conversation.

1. Headblade ATX or Sport. They are different. Some like one. Some like the other. I started with the Sport and have stuck with it. Don't feel a need to change.  Some have switched to the ATX. They have a different feel. Either work. Guess you just have to try them out.  There are three camps. Those who don't like headblade, those who like SPORT and those who like ATX.  I've not seen a strong leaning one way of the other here.

2. Matte?  I have both head lubes. Matte and Glossy.  There is some difference.  I prefer the glossy. I like the shine, although I'm BBC, bald by choice, so I also have a shadow which softens the shine.  The MATTE is less shiny than glossy, although I would not say that it is 'dull' or 'super matte'.

3. Witchhazel as an after shave.
3. Shave brush to foam up the soap.
3. Shave Secret oil. Just a nice touch. Mix in with shave cream.
3. Headslick is great! Use with Shave Secret
3. I use both the headblade AND a Gillette Power Fusion pro.  There is room for both in shaving your head. If I skip a day, I start with the grain and the Gillette, to mow down the fuzz. Then shave against the grain with the headblade. If shaving daily, then typically just the headblade, but perhaps a touchup with the Gillette. In case there's a spot that I missed.

4. Savor the moments while pampering yourself with a daily head shave.

I really enjoyed the buzzed super short hairstyle, but once I shaved my head .... There is just nothing like it.  Smooth every morning. Warm sun shining on your head. Raindrops falling on your head. Headrub from the wife.  There's just nothing like it. You'll enjoy it.

Again, Welcome.

Thanks for the reply. This forum seems a great place.

I think the best thing for me to do is to do the "30 day trial" and see how I feel after that.

One reason why I am leaning more towards doing this is due to the time it takes to keep the buzz cut, doing it every other day does take time and would rather cut it down.

A big factor in making me want to try is that I have mpb and like to keep hair length etc all the same length. Hence buzzing everyday and even now that I still feel doesn't really do the trick. Hoping that using a razor will solve this and give me more confidence.

Looks like spending a lot of time on this forum now.
Thanks Again,.   :)

Welcome :) I started with an ATX and love it, the way it's designed (to pull rather than push) seems natural to me so I settled in really quick. I usually finish around the ears though with a Shick titanium

Definitely get a good soap like Cella or Headslick and badger hair brush. The only problem with the badger hair brushes is that because they feel so good, it's hard to decide when to stop lathering

P.s as far as shine goes, I'd just go with it but do have some wipes in the car if you're out all day and want to freshen up

Well said Mrzed and crowbar.

Give a razor a try. You will love the nice smooth feeling that it brings that you don't get from just using the wald balding razor.

G'Day pickettwayne mate  O0

Welcome to the Bastion Of Baldness.

Nice intro.

MrZed and Crowbar great information.

I love my ATX, it gives me the smoothest shave I have ever had, and boy have I tried a few things lol

Headblade Matt lotion I use to keep the shine off, it doesn't last the whole day but it's pretty good.

Welcome! I don't have much to add to what the others have said, but if you start using a razor, you may want to shave with the grain until your scalp adjust. Good Luck!

The amount of shadow you have will depend largely on the color of your hair and the color of your skin and how much contrast there is there.  In my profile pic you can see a bit of shadow and I had JUST shaved but because my hair is almost black and I'm fair skinned, no matter how close the shave there's always shadow.  After an hour or two it's pretty obvious at least for me.

Avoiding shine is something women have been doing with their faces for decades  ;D   In addition to the more educated responses you've already gotten, almost any kind of powder is going to make your skin appear matte.
