Unsung Hero: Bic Hybrid Advanced 4 Razor
« on: April 28, 2013, 01:39:19 PM »
Hey guys,

I know there's a lot of love around here for DE razors and the Headblade, but I figured I'd pop in with a review for this razor, especially for those out there who might be fans of the Mach 3 or Schick Hydro. You might be interested in picking up the Bic Hybrid Advanced 4 razor. It's cheap but doesn't feel cheap and gives a reliable shave.

This razor, right here:

The Bic Hybrid Advanced 4 is the razor I've been using to shave my head since the beginning.

What I love about this razor is that you can get four blades and a handle for under ten bucks. The blades are long lasting and have a pretty good flow through design that makes the blades easy to clean of stubble.

They recently released a newer, slightly smaller version (with an orange tab as opposed to the blue tab) which I picked up yesterday and just shaved with this morning.

The difference is not the number of blades but slightly less space between them, which makes the newer blade clog slightly more often than the previous version, but this is outweighed by the fact that the individual blades move independently now, which makes shaving against the grain on the back of my head so much more comfortable! The only spot where the older design (blue tab) didn't work so well was going against the grain on the back of the head.

Is anyone really sure that more blades is better?

Some people on this site claim that one blade is less irritating than multiple blades and some others say that a single blade gives a closer shave.

I only find blades irritating if I don't replace them soon enough.  I don't expect to get 14 shaves from the same blade, single or multiple.

On my face single blade only.... The head doesn't seem to mind the HB3's..... YMMV

I think it's more a question of (in my experience) the quality of the blades. A great 3 bladed expensive razor will perform just as well if not better than a less expensive 4 bladed razor.

That said, on my head I would never use less than two blades, and 3-4 blades are essential for my face.

I find the more sensitive the skin and the more thick/stubborn the hair (neck is the worst), more blades personally help me avoid nicks and bumps. But that's just me.

Thank you for the review!!
