Hey guys,
So after shaving for over five months, I finally am starting to feel really, really comfortable with my routine.
That said, it took me a long time (until today, actually) to do a good job shaving against the grain on the back of my head.
My routine before today was to lather up with Edge shaving gel, and then start shaving at one ear and going all the way back along my head, going up and down across to the other ear.
This worked great on 3/4 of my head, but not the back of my head, beneath the crown, because the hair back there grows the opposite way.
I had been wanting to shave against the grain back there for a long time, but found it very difficult. The learning curve is pretty big on the back of the head anyway, especially when you have to go by feel and can't see what's going on back there. Before today, I usually had to shave the back of my head twice (going with the grain) to feel confident that I hadn't missed a spot.
The problem with going against the grain in the front and with the grain in the back was that I wasn't:
1) Getting a universally smooth feeling everywhere on my dome.
2) The hair on the back of my head was growing back faster than in front.
So finally today, after really getting a feel of shaving the back of my head with the grain, I finally went against. After getting out of the shower, it was the first part of my head I shaved. I really angled my hand and was careful not to apply too much pressure, and went with it.
The results are great! Because I only had to shave back there once, I cut my shave time by about 5 minutes. I got a little bit of irritation, but I figure that will pass as I do it against the grain more often. Overall, I'm pleased I was finally able to do this.
I'm in the same boat now. I no longer even do wtg in the back because it's just not efficient
same here, mpb i guess....its the thickest bit of hair, and the last to stop growing, on most men...
Hey Benlen ! Thanks for update with your shaving routine. With time and positive attitude plus experimenting ... all that effort makes you "smooth" with pride and a confident smile !
That is great. I have been doing ATG since I started shaving and yes it does help with that area staying smoother longer .
