really long-time lurker says hello
« on: April 17, 2013, 09:29:42 AM »
Well, I should join the discussions now that the ATX is on order and since the clippers that were intended to take me from 3mm to 2mm etc. have broken (first at 2mm then at 3mm), the gentle millimetre-wise route of gradual reduction to shaved seems futile.  Forums are generally not my thing, so my apologies for the hesitancy.

Some diverse bits of information:
(a) My hair has done the gradual receding and thinning, and I don't really mind.  Nor am I concerned about hiding this.  Age: lower forties.
(b) I am a scientist at a University.  This is generally an environment in which tolerance pervades but that is also simultaneously unnervingly conservative in some respects. (in other words:  I am not sure how my shaved head would be looked upon)

Given growth and absence of growth of my hair, keeping it very short is the obvious option, so that my hair has been at 3 or 2mm for over a year and relatively short for much longer.  Although shaved heads are common here (but not too common), and even although my style verges on the edgier, I still do not seem to be able to convince myself of the final obvious step - as encouraged in this forum.  Perhaps it is the more conservative managerial interactions that are part of my job that make me hesitate, or that I have to give lectures to students and presentations in diverse environments.  (From what I have seen on SBG, is that you will probably have excellent replies to this.)  I have ordered the ATX.  Perhaps its arrival will provide the push I need (or perhaps not).  I have also mulled about the shaving device a lot, as my face is definitely a friend of my trusty DE razor.

Nice to chat with you.

Welcome KZA.
As a long time lurker, I'm sure you're familiar with the 30 day rule. I suggest giving it a try. If you don't like the shaved look, it shouldn't take too long for your hair to grow back to the short length you maintain.

I started out with a DE on the head. It can be frustrating at first but I now give myself awesome shaves with it.

That's the ticket for me...I use the sensor since it seems to give me the slickness that I like. I have tried the 5 blade variety and they don't give me the close to nothing feeling that I get now. Anyway welcome!

Kza, welcome to SBG!  I wouldn't worry much about the managerial aspect of having a shaved head.  Many of the CEOs and C-level executives that I speak to on a daily basis have a shaved head.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

I am now retired but I was a professional, even of faculty of a Univ.  I always had very buzzed hair and shaved my head for several years starting in 1980 before it became more common.  Never had a problem.

I didn't read your original post all the way through, I thought you were already sly....I have had many sly professors during my college career about two decades ago and that was when shaved heads were even less common. A shaved head goes well with any professional wear, and I'm willing to bet a shaved head will be a non-issue at your job. Good luck!
