Identifying a DE razor
« on: April 06, 2013, 04:43:11 PM »
Hi. I posted this question on another forum but I'm just looking for a couple if perspectives. I just acquired 2 safety razors from my dad. I don't see anything identifying brand or year but I don't know what I'm looking for. They both say PAT.NOS.ON.PACKAGING in the blade compartment.

I also have this one from an op shop. Same deal. No idea what/where/how old etc. This one doesn't have any writing or symbols.

Hi Raul:  Those are some great vintage razors you got there.  The top pic.  It looks like  an early 1960-66s Gillette Super Speed and the razor under that is a 1940s Gillette Super Speed.  I have a 1940s Gillette Super Speed.

The razor in the bottom pic is a Gillette Tech (ball end).  Clean them up with some hot water, Scrubbing Bubbles, and an old toothbrush and you are ready to shave.  Keep us posted.

It is very refreshing to see some interest in DE or SE shaving here on SBGs.  You should definitely check out www.badgerandblade.com.  This is an excellent site that is devoted to the traditional way of shaving.  They have many quality members there like SBGs.

Warhawk has nailed it IMO

I also have a flare tip, it's a great razor.

All of them should serve you well Raulski!

Hi. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I searched & I'm pretty sure they are a 1964 J4 Super Speed Flare Tip, a 1948 Super Speed and a 1940s
ball end handle Tech.
I used the '64 tonight on the face & head with a wilkinson sword blade & arko shave soap. Very nice. Much heavier than the ball tech.
Gotta get me some feather DE blades now (:{)

Have you tried Astra or Voskhod blades? They're 2 of my favorites.
If you get lucky enough to find some old Gillette Spoiler blades, you'll understand why they're called that.
I shaved for 3 months straight with a single Spoiler blade, before it needed to be changed.
I normally get between 3 and 8 shaves per blade, depending on the blade.

Those old Gillettes are fantastic razors. Especially the Super Speeds.
