Does it get better?
« on: March 15, 2013, 03:30:28 PM »
Hi all!
New here. I'm glad I found this forum :)
I've been reading it for the past few days and finally decided to ask a few questions.

I've been thinking about going bald for many years for many reasons, but mainly because I'm slowly losing hair.
I took the move 2 days ago and shaved my head. I think it looks good actually. But I'm still getting used to it.
However, I have few questions.

1) I think my hair is growing way too fast. Already after 15 or so hours I can feel the hair, and it's visible after less than a day. I think that I will have to shave every day. Or does it get better later on or is this something that I have to get used to? I know it's kind of a stupid question since hair just does not start growing slower, but I know nothing about hair so I'm asking anyway :)

2) After I shave, I can still see the marks where my hair was. My head is red. I'm using the same razor for shaving beard. I will order HeadBlade ATX though and see if it makes any difference. Or does it get better with time? I'd like my head to have the same color all over it. I also live in Sweden and there's not much sun here, so there's not a big chance of getting a tan.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

I've only been getting positive reactions from everyone. So I'm going to hold and see past the 30 day rule. Hopefully I will have my issues solved :)

If you really want a smooth head you will have to shave at least once a day. Your hair growth rate sounds pretty normal, so your head will have the same tendency as your face for the old 5-O'clock shadow problem, so I'll even shave again in the evening if I'm going out somewhere special.
I do, and you could also use a product called "Jergens natural glow" a nice moisturizer  to help with the color match until nature and the sun has a chance to catch up.

Interesting, thanks for the advice.

I can't seem to find "Jergens Natural Glow" anywhere in Sweden. There are however other self tanning products. Question is, how much of an impact does it make? Will it make my head brown while the rest of my body is white? :)

Welcome mate,

Yeah if you are chasing the smooth feeling you will have to shave everyday.

Sun and time will lessen the shadow.

Good luck

Well I know from experience that the Jergens helps and works very slowly with no noticeable down side, I cannot speak to any other products, maybe someone else on the forum can offer some advice.

G'Day Nebel mate  O0

Welcome aboard!!

As the other have mentioned, you will need to shave the old noggin everyday.

Also as Lynchy mentioned a little sun and time and that will help.

At this point, just a few days into head shaving, it's going to take some time to do it. But give it a month or so and the shave will be much faster and not a bother. At first it took be about 30-45 minutes to shave my head, but now that I'm used to it, I can be done in 5 for a quick day (might miss a few spots) or 10 minutes for an overall smooth shave.

Yes, it gets better as you learn the path.

Been shaving once a day for some years, becomes natural and really consumes little time. In time the color of the skin will match - bit of sandpaper in the evening is natural.

Thanks everyone. Feels better, although I never thought it looked bad on me, not even after first shave. And I have gotten a lot of positive comments that this looks better.
Shaving the head feels much better than cutting the hair! :D

I hope it won't take too long to even out the color. Anyone know the average time it will take? Should I visit solarium to speed up the process?

It's a bit frustrating to see that even though I shave you can still see the parts where I had hair. I might try that tanning thingy after a month or so of shaving (the 30 day rule expires on my birthday).

welcome to the brotherhood! Not a lot more I can add, the brothers have given their advice lol...it's normal for the shadow to appear, no one seems to really notice it tbh, summers coming...apparently, a bit of colour will help...get a photo up on your profile...always good to put a face to the name

Thanks!

This is one of the more awesome communities I've seen. Everyone is so nice and gets along so nicely :)

I only took a couple of pictures. Trying out with different beard. I'm completely shaven now but I think I'll keep the goatee.

Even a fairly small dose of sun seems to make a difference for me, as my dome has never before been exposed like this. I certainly don't want sunburn on my head! Id say even after 3 weeks of a little sun exposure in the winter my tone has mostly evened out so it didn't seem to take real long as long as I don't wear a hat outside.

Welcome!  :-)

As the weather gets warmer start spending more time in the sun, don't forget the sunblock if you intend to spend more than 15 minutes in the sun. Don't over do it, the sun can cause more problems. Technique to help get a better shave, shave with the grain across the grain then against the grain. The closer you get your shave the longer you stay smooth.
