Opinions Please
« on: June 12, 2007, 10:08:10 PM »
I have been considering a shave but my wife thinks I will look too young and not very masculine.  Please take a look at the picture in my profile and let me know what you think!  Should I go for it, or just keep wearing a hat to cover the progressive hair loss? Thanks for the advice!

I'm trying to figure out how shaving your head would make you look less masculine.  Sounds like an oxymoron to me.  I think you should go for it.  I think you'd look good with a slick dome and a goatee.

If you're losing your hair, then you're pretty much going to have to go sly at some point anyway, so if you're thinking of doing it, there's no time like the present.  That being said, it looks like you still have plenty of hair left, so it's not a must at this point.  If you don't go sly for the time being, then I'd suggest that at a minimum, you should get your hair buzzed shorter on the sides.  That can often give the illusion of more hair on top -- of course there comes a time when that no longer works.

Welcome to the group.  Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Thanks a lot  for the advice...I really appreciate it!  I normally do wear a goatee but shaved it for my wedding.  This pic was taken in 1995 and since I have probably lost about 30 % of what appears to be in front and top!  I always thought the MPB would not be so bad if it was symmetrical but I seem to have non-pattern baldness.  Yeah, I don't know what was up with the less-masculine thing so that's why I asked.  Again, thanks for the advice...I'm working up the courage!

Welcome to Sly Bald Guys!!

I'm glad you decided to post up and ask your question.

I agree with RazorX and Ian.  At least try a buzz cut, but I would recommend trying the shaved head look.

Hiya whatamIthinking,

Go for it - I'm sure you'll look fine. It almost always looks more "dynamic" than a few remaining whisps of hair pathetically clinging on for dear life!

As regards the looking young & less masculine thing - well, what's wrong with looking young & anyway if you grow a beard or goatee of some kind with it I would have thought that that alone would put pay to any of those concerns. You don't often see too many young women sporting goatees now do you?

So anyway, welcome to the site & let us know what you are thinking:)

oh yeh, also, i forgot to say in my last post that if your hair loss isn't following the usual mpb pattern it is possible (from what I've read ... & I'm no expert obviously) that it maybe due to some other factors & may, in that case, be reversible so perhaps it would be worth consulting a trichologist (hair doctor to you & me) as well.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide.

Try going sly.  The bug has bitten and you won't be happy until you at least try it.  I know for a fact.  You've got the facial structure for it.  Beat nature to the punch.

I can't add anymore than what has already been posted.  Try it - I think you will like it.

Asking that question in a room full of sly bald guys, did you really think you would get any other answer?

Seriously, if you're here, I think you already made up your mind, and you are looking for the support. If it doesn't suit you, it will grow out in a couple of weeks. And going sly ALWAYS makes a guy look more masculine.
