Im new and confused about my baldness
« on: February 18, 2013, 11:32:27 AM »
Hi everyone,

My name is Sahil and new to the forum scene. I became bald at a very early age. Started thinning at 18 and now am 26 and completely bald. My options for hair transplant are very limited as my donor hair is also very thin. In fact I only have two options... Keeping my head completely shaved or doing a FUE body hair transplant

The first option seems simpler and less painful but Im just confused if a completed shaved look suits me or not. Till a couple of months ago I never used to shave the side or back of my head but now that my donor hair is also receding I did not not see any point of keeping it and as a result recently shaved every thing off. So I just wanted an honest opinion if this looks suits me or not. This is in no way a cry for acception but in fact the search for the truth. Theres no point in asking my friends or family as I know they will say it suits in order not to hurt my feelings. So if you guys think it looks sh*t then just say so. I can take it. Please see the pictures I have attached.

My second options is a body hair transplant which requires me to get thousands of grafts... I am considering it. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the matter?

Thank you

Hoping to hear from you soon

Welcome Sahil,

You need to have a look that you are comfortable living with, so that is going to take some additional thought on your part.

Personally, I can't imagine the costs of hair transplant - not just financial, but also the physical endurance, the stress, and the worry about whether it will be long-lasting.

I looked at your photos before I read your message and I think your appearance is quite fine; handsome actually. The lack of hair draws more attention to your facial features. Great eyes.

It's a good look for you, but you need to become "at ease" with it.

Others will be along with their comments and suggestions. Please post back with what you are thinking/feeling, and any questions that perhaps we can help you with.

Thank you for replying back and sharing your words of wisdom. I guess eventually I will come to accept my baldness. You would think I would have by now but I always believed a hair transplant was an option for me until I recently found out that my lack donor hair could not really support it. I guess thats just got me depressed ever since. I just have to be stronger about it I guess.

Thank you once again for replying. Very kind of you.

Well I am not someone who thinks everyone should shave their hair and hair is evil! So I try and an offer honest opinions. It's hard losing your hair, I look at pictures of how great my hair used to be and yeah I do miss it! In some ways I do feel less attractive than I used to but then saying that othertimes I like the fact I have shaven it all off.

It sounds like your hair has given up the ghost and it's true you have possibly two options. All the pain of a hair transplant to me is just not worth it, especially given what you have said, so the other option is to have a balding hairline OR to be sly! What do look like now as a sly guy? You look like a guy that has taken control and is making the best of a situation he cannot control.

That's the difference between being sly and bald. You are taking control and taking care of yourself to look BETTER, by the white t-shirt pic, it looks like you keep yourself in shape and are in control of your body, so why not what hair you have left.

I can honestly hand on heart say I think the look suits you. I think you rock the look.

It's a new look to you and it often takes us longer to get used to it than everyone else. New people you meet will not know you with hair (little or a lot), they will just accept you as you. Older people will recognise that this is something you are doing to improve how you look, some people dye their hair as they hate the grey, you are pretty much doing the same, making the most of the situation.

Keep the faith mate, you have nothing to worry about!

Thank you for the great advice. There are days that I accept my baldness and days I cant stand to look at myself in the mirror. Hopefully one day I can embrace it with the same confidence as you have. By the way I gotta say you have a really cool look. I see youre from the UK. hope you are a Man U supporter. lol.

Cheers mate

Personally I think you rock the look and if you go out with confidence everyone will be in favour.  Having been to India a few times I know there are not many men with shaved heads but it is becoming more common.  Now you are setting the trend.

What are you worried about -- it looks great. More importantly it looks natural -- meaning that it looks like you have been that way for years.

Give it a few months after which you will be accustomed to it and it will appear "normal" and you will be at ease. Soon, you will be perfectly happy with the look.

I personally think the Sly look suits you but you have to live with yourself each day.

I haven't seen any pictures of you with hair but I think the look suits you, looks natural to me. But I can understand that on some days you like it and on some days not. It took me at least a week to really like it and other peoples negative opinions made me insecure very easyly - but now I feel really confident and the best thing is I'm not constantly thinking about someone noticing that I am balding. Maybe you want to try the 30 day challenge - at first I just concentrated pn my bald head and now I am looking at my whole appearence - to concentrate on only one aspect and getting frustrated about it is also a symptom of body dysmorphic disorder and I understand that worrying too much about a little aspect of oneself can be depressing - so I would say give yourself some time to get used to it and then decide if you want to keep it - try to feel how you really feel about it - without the fear of other peoples negative reaction

If you think it suits you, it suits you.  If you don't think it suits you, it does not.

Why should you let the opinions of others determine what you should or should not do?  Well, yes, there are "does" and "not does," but they are often only enshrined in various religious edicts such as the Christian "Ten Commandments," but I recall nothing in the Christian Bible about "Thou shalt not shave the head."  Oh, yes, I know about Samson and his problems, but I think that was all about s*x and not sh*v*ng, so it had to be all made metaphorical to pass the censors.  Hair or its lack is not a moral issue.

Ming thinks that the major problem with shaving your head is that so many head-shavers end up looking so similar--a stadium full of cantaloupes--and we compensate with pogonotrophy.  That generally works out OK.  Just a thought.  Be a melonhead or not?  Your decision.

You look really natural sly, even if you don't feel that way yet.

I'd say give the nonpermanent option (shaving) a few months before going for something drastic (transplant).

You look great sly to me!

Welcome mate, I think it looks fine!

Losing hair does suck, there is no doubt about it, now you have to get to a place you are happy/comfortable with!

Good luck
