New and Scared
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:45:06 AM »
Hey All,
I've come across a few stories that fit me to a tee.  I more than anything would like the nice buzzed head look, or normal shaved head look.  However, 3 years ago in my anxiety over hairloss, made the mistake of going to Bosley and on the morning of I told them I wasn't sure about this in fear of what the future would hold.  They put my mind at ease and said don't talk yourself out of something that will only enhance your life.  Well, it did enhance my life and I felt good for maybe a year and a half, but then the only way it has enhanced my life ever since is by focusing on is it becoming noticeable since hairloss is progressive.  And yes, mine has progressed.  Along with that, the grafts in hairline don't look as natural as they should since you can see the roots where it meets the skin, and some are thicker than others which shouldn't be near the hairline.  So with that, there is the scar on the back of my head as well.  I have been to numerous doctors and most just say I still have lots of hair, add more to camouflage etc, but all that will do is cause more issues since I feel regardless of what I do, I won't be able to keep up with my hairloss or achieve that look of naturalness.  I want to just be done with it and let go of all that anxiety and constant worry, no more damn drugs that effect my sex drive etc.  Just LIVE and be free.  But now I'm not free due to wondering how the hairs would look shaved down in the hairline or the skin underneath.  The scar in back bothers me as well, but not nearly as much as the front for that is what I see or what everyone sees when looking at you.  My looks were my identity..always have been.  I made my hair a part of that identity in my own insecurity and now I am paying the price for it.  I am thinking of getting the grafts removed and put back into the scar, but not sure if that would cause more scaring in the front.  Ive seen some who have done the same and I see there is no evidence of anything ever being there.  But I still hear stories of others etc.  Or maybe just do laser on some and get the bigger ones removed?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. I am planning on moving to Hawaii in 7 months..  And i'd like to start that new life with the new me...the Free one.

Welcome Scarfears.  I went down the HT path back in the mid 90's.  A few years ago I had my plugs removed surgically followed by laser resurfacing.  PM if you have any questions.

Glad you share your story so that others may decide to give the bald look a try first before the hair transplants.

Wow! thanks for the honest posting and welcome.

Like others have said, dont jump into having more surgery just yet. Look through the boards and see what others have done, try buzzing down or going SLY first.

I know that you must be panicking and wanting things to be sorted, more surgery might not be the answer.

Good luck!

If you feel your hair was part of your identity, try a new one. You with no hair might be an identity you grow to like. I did.

Welcome! Ill. Baldy said it best, but I have visited a dermatologist to remove cysts on my scalp...He along with some of the other members on this site have given great advice on how to minimize the appearance of scars, though mine are probably much shorter than yours. Congratulations on taking the next step, and good luck!

I have similar experience with HT etc. PM me and I will tell you about micro tattooing of the scars etc. The results are amazing. There is a place in LA doing this called HIS Hair. Check out the formerly HT scarred guys on their forums. Some of their staff are even former HT scarred guys who have had the tattooing. I will tell you that to get a start on the donor scars if they are at all raised or trenched a few sessions with a Pixel brand fractional laser will help significantly in smoothing, evening out and even shrinking the scar a bit.  Most dermatoligists have these lasers now for other purposes but they work great on HT donor scars. Then if you choose micro tattooing you will get a near perfect result. Then you are free to buzz/shave at will.

G'day mate, and welcome to the sly family!

While I can't personally help you, you've been offered some pretty awesome support there. If I were you I'd have a chat to both of these guys and milk them for all the information they have. That's what's so great about this community, we all have our own stories to share, and often they overlap  O0

I want to just be done with it and let go of all that anxiety and constant worry, no more damn drugs that effect my sex drive etc.  Just LIVE and be free.  But now I'm not free due to wondering how the hairs would look shaved down in the hairline or the skin underneath.

You have these other guys with expert knowledge to guide you.

You make it quite clear that you want to let go of the anxiety of having hair or as some here call it "being free of the tyranny of hair" and you just want to live and be free. Why wait any longer to be free? Why not buzz your hair and see what it looks like -- maybe the scars won't be that noticeable? And then try shaving it -- say the next day or next week. If the scars need to be fixed in whatever way this can still be done but it may not be necessary.

The beauty of this approach is if the scarring is not too bad there are no more costs and if it is "bad" and you get used to going bald with "bad" scarring then getting the scarring fixed will make you feel even better. Surely showing a few scars that can be fixed for a short while can't be too big a problem?
