I went back to Yosef, my friendly down-the-block barber, today cos I was feeling lazy and this icky cold made me want some pampering.
My handmade scarf and hat became the topic of conversation, and eventually we agreed that if I make him a scarf that replicates his hometeam soccer logo, I'll get free headshaves for life.
It's a bit of a challenge for me but the good kind. I'm an adept knitter and think I can figure it out in one or two tries.
Of course I'm tipping him very generously (the original price of the shave) but even so $15 for an hour of relaxation is a no brainer!
Still not as close as I can get it but a nice indulgence.

Hmm, this challenge is a little harder than I thought
But still giving it a go!
Even if I "win" I'd pay about the same I'd pay normally via tipping (it's super cheap for the quality there to begin w/) and I'm pretty sure he knows this. More like a friendly discount to keep me coming in (plus he gets a cool scarf!).
Not unusual in my neighborhood -- bodega down the block gives 10% off to the customers they see pretty much every day just as a matter of course. So of course we all go there every day because it makes the customer feel really loved to get a "special deal."
I think it's also partly the barber trying to drum up more female customers even tho I'm not getting the typical female haircut. It's a unisex shop but their clientele is almost all men, but he has training to do fancier female cuts and the one I saw him do looked like it was well done. I definitely told my friends.
I don't mind being a marketing gimmick tho, hey that's my day job too

That sounds like a great trade off, Bella! Glad you have a good barber friend! I've never had a barber shave yet. Though not sure I truly trust anyone else with a razor to my scalp.

I haven't had the pleasure of a barber shave yet either. I'm looking forward to getting one next time I'm home on vacation.

Life interfered on the scarves but I've still been back a few times and it's a really nice indulgence. He's told me a few times it's "on him" and I've noticed it's always if someone is waiting so I suspect it's the marketing angle, which again is fine with me.
Surprisingly I don't feel awkward and the other guys are always super supportive and into it. And sometimes I bring my dog (I think this is a NYC thing, I'd have never done this in other cities I've lived in) and she gets pampered with petting by all the waiting patrons -- win/win!

I agree. It's definitely nice to relax and get a barber shave once in awhile. I love the hot shaving cream. Lol.
Still, no one knows my head like i do. I still surprise my wife at how fast I can get my head shaved clean.
Hmmm, i think I may just go and get one of those shaving cream warmers. Lol

Awesome! It feels good to me to be pampered once in awhile with a head shave by a barber. IT is never as close as I have done it but it still feels good.
once in awhile.
