Alum block on scalp
« on: February 01, 2013, 05:18:09 AM »
Hi. I've suffered a super-oily scalp for ages. Tried aftershave lotions, balms, oils, preshaves, & of course, nothing as well as experimenting with different soaps/gels/shampoos. By end of day my head was like old ham. Got an alum block off eBay & I find it keeps my head dry-to-touch all day.
I'm posting this in part to help out anyone in the same boat as well as ask if anyone has another method of preventing grease-ball dome.
What are your experiences?

I use alum on my head fairly regularly, for me I still get some oily build up throughout the day.

Glad it's working for you though :)

What exactly is Alum?
It's basically salt and other minerals that seal up minor nicks from shaving.
I use one on my head, it works well. Since I started using it, there's no more blood on my pillow (from nicks on the back of my head that I didn't notice).

My RazoRock alum should be coming in a few days and I'm really excited to give it a try.  I don't like the oily head feeling.  And I think it will decrease any irritation I get from shaving.

So GutsyGirl surely you have your Alum Block now. What do you think? Does it work as you expected?

I've been using my alum block for more than a month now so I think it's safe to express my opinion.

How I use it:
Right after shaving I put my head under running warm water and rub the alum block all over it several times. If I do it without the water it stings pretty bad. Finally, I finish with really cold water.

What it does for me:
-No more irritations if I use it under running water. Tightens up my head, no need for any other products after shaving anymore.
-Reduces the oil production. However it doesn't work in places where the oil problem is bigger such as classes, the underground, cinemas, live clubs and pretty much everywhere it's crowded and warm.

So I would say alum block didn't solve my problem at all, not even partially, since I spend the biggest part of my day at the university where I have to use face cleaning whipes every 2 hours to keep my head clean.

A barber I frequent in NYC turned me onto the Alum Block and it works wonders. Really does stop minor nicks. Just remember to keep it dry after each use or it will dissolve.

I have been using alum on my face for about a year and it is wonderful stuff. Used it both times I have shaved my head and it has been great for that too.

Alum and I...
To be honest I'm not entirely sold on alum yet but I also haven't given it a fully fair shot. It just seems to sting like nuts when I put it on. Wondering if I'm somehow using too much? I usually wet my hands, rub them on alum block, rub hands on head.

Idk if my head is just super sensitive or what? I feel like this should be fairly straight-forward and yet maybe I've found a way to confuse simplicity?

After my first few less than perfect tries with alum, I went back to witch hazel post shave, topped off with bump stopper 2 just on my neckline, and the razoroxk wax aftershave which I absolutely love...and everyone loves the smell of that stuff on me too (glad I haven't had comments about it being too manly smelling...and the scent does cover up the stink of the bump stopper stuff which I don't like the smell of one bit).  I don't shave every day. It varies between every other day and every 4 days or so - I like my shadow too (no receeding hairline here). So on the days I don't shave, I wash my head with cetaphil or selsun blue, then when I towel pat dry I put a little gold bond medicated lotion up there and the dimethicone keeps me from shining. :-)
